In this day and age, it seems as if children are becoming more and more ungrateful. Growing up in a family that worked hard to make sure that there was food was on the table, we were always taught to be appreciative of what we had.
Sometimes, parents feel as if their children take them for granted and this mom knew the feeling all too well when her daughter did something so disrespectful that it made her fume with anger. However, instead of grounding her, this particular mom taught her daughter an extremely valuable life lesson.
Keep reading to find out the full story and to see how the internet reacted to the Florida mom's punishment...
What would you do if your daughter decided to throw a gift you got her into the trash?Get angry? Start yelling? Send her to her room? All of the above are justifiable.
However, this Florida mom decided that she would take a different path...Haley Hassell shared a post on social media showing her daughter in one of her lowest moments.
The post garnered a lot of attention, especially from parents...The internet seemed divided on the entire situation, though more people did think that Hassel deserved a pat on the back for the way that she handled things. Let me fill you in on what took place.
Haley decided that she wanted to surprise her daughter with a "back-to-school" present. Her daughter, Presleigh, had asked for a "LOL pencil box" that she could store her stationary in and, after hours of searching, Haley finally found the perfect one and decided to surprise her daughter with it.
However, the single mom was less than impressed at her daughter's reaction.
"That's stupid, everyone in my class has that... I don't want it anymore."Upon seeing the pencil case, the six-year-old had a look of disdain on her face. After she had thrown it into the trash, she slammed her door shut and yelled at her mother.
Haley clarified that her daughter had initially asked for that specific pencil case...And what makes things worse is that she had gone to three different stores in order to find it.
Haley, who was fuming at this point, tried to calm herself down. Most parents would have punished the ungrateful child, but this mom decided that this was the perfect opportunity to teach Presleigh a valuable life lesson. She has way more patience than I would have in that situation.
She wrote in the post, describing how she felt:"By this time there was probably smoke coming out of my ears and I'm trying real hard not to completely lose it on this kid that I have worked so hard to completely take care of financially on my own [and] make sure she always gets what she needs and then some."
The hard-working mom made her point loud and clear.
When her daughter saw it, she burst into tears. The little girl wailed and asked for the "LOL" pencil box back, but her mom rightfully refused, telling her that she was going to use the plastic bag for her stationary.
"She lost her mind! Suddenly the LOL box she just trashed was good enough and the Ziploc bag was horrible..."
She emphasized that she had already taught her daughter these lessons...Haley said: "But I thought I had always taught her to be grateful [and] know how lucky she was..." It seems as if she didn't listen, but this would teach her well.
She told her that she was to give the new pencil case to someone else...
She further explained the little details to her daughter...
She concluded the post with this statement:"Maybe I overreact sometimes but I would've done anything to have all the things she does as a child. I truly believe changing your perception [and] just being grateful can turn around any situation in life."
I don't think that she was "overreacting" at all.Teach them young and teach them well, that's what my mom always said to us when it came to learning valuable life lessons. Imagine knowing that your child was one of those entitled brats who walked around as though everything was too good for them? I can't even stand the thought.
And over five hundred other people - mainly parents - showed their support for the Florida mom."Good job", one commented.
Some did think that Haley took things a bit too far...
via: TwitterBut only very few people agreed with this comment. "Broadcasting" the situation gives other parents the confidence to be able to teach these sorts of things to their children, too. It's not right that a hard-working mother has to feel so unappreciated by her child.
"Good for this mother!"
