When it comes to choosing the ideal pet, a dog is always the first that comes to mind.

And one man really went the extra mile in terms of his adoption ...

It's safe to say that dogs are one of the world's most popular pets.

These lovable and loyal companions make the perfect household pets, and it also helps that they’re so damn cute.

But it is a sad reality that a lot of dogs are homeless.

Many dogs are abandoned and are left to be stray all around the world.

There are too many dogs abandoned to live on the streets.

It is estimated that there are around seventy million stray dogs here in America currently.

What exactly happens to these strays?

A lot of stray dogs are picked up by the local councils and are kept in shelters or pounds until they are rehomed.

But there is a devastating reality...

Many of these dogs are euthanized (put to sleep) if they cannot get rehomed quickly enough.

There's a huge effort to steer people towards adopting rather than buying pooches from breeders.

We've all heard the saying "adopt don't shop."

And with many us spending a lot more time at home ...

Many of us will be crossing our fingers that a new pooch will be entering our lives.

But one man really went the extra mile in terms of dog adoption.

Former bodybuilder Bobby Humphreys (and his dogs) have taken the internet by storm.

After a pretty awful year, Bobby turned his life around.

By bringing a whopping fifty dogs into his life!

Bobby Humphreys had a rough year.

The bodybuilder from Boonsboro, Maryland, began his year with his wife leaving him.

Even worse, she had been having an affair.

Bobby quickly spiraled into a deep depression.

Things got so bad that Bobby tried to take his own life.

But best friend Connie stepped in and saved him.

That's when Bobby decided it was time to turn things around.

"One person above all, Connie, kept me on this planet. A true friend that was always there."

"In fact, she wouldn't leave me alone long enough to do what I wanted to do. She literally just wouldn't go away no matter how much I told her to."

"She had lost friends to that before and wasn't going to lose me."

That's when everything changed for Bobby.

"She was moving in between homes in her new place and she could not keep her son's dog, Lady."

"She asked me if I would mind temporarily keeping her until she could find another place."

"Of course, I accepted. Lady is a special case who did not like people very much, especially men."

"'I was warned about her at first and she was placed in a kennel in my house when I was at work one day."

"Unfortunately, that kennel was placed right underneath my television that I sit at when I get home so it only took me about 15 minutes of watching this poor girl sitting in the kennel before I decided that I was going to let her out because I could not stand seeing her there."

"Lady came with me and literally made me whole again with unconditional love and affection."

"Connie came over to check on her an hour and a half later that evening and could not believe her eyes when she found Lady in my lap and we have been inseparable ever since."

"During my quest, I saw how badly chihuahuas are treated."

"I too was treated so horribly by people in my life and this society that I tried to commit suicide."

"Again, one of them saved me, and I know what it's like to not have anyone there to protect you or be there for you so I made a promise that once with me, they'd never have to feel that way again."

So Bobby set up his very own rescue, exclusively for chihuahuas.

"'I have an incredible relationship with a local animal control who is in charge of my kennel license and they adore what I do, they just simply asked to take some of the pressure off of them because of my social media status."

"This is a full-time job at all levels. A typical day starts at 7:30 am and we finish around 9 pm."

"We sleep there, we eat there unless I am taking the dog to vet appointments which gives them one on one time or for other various reasons such as rescuing them, we are interacting with them all day long every day."

"We have tried to develop systems for everything to make it both efficient and comfortable for the dogs. Of course, that is a constantly changing entity of its own."

"I have to be honest with you, I was very nervous about this."

"I was concerned about what people would think. Would they think I am the male version of the crazy cat lady? Would they think I've gone completely insane? I can tell you this, almost every single friend of mine, not even just the close ones and every single family member as well, have been nothing but supportive across the board of me doing this."

"As far as hobbies go, all the different aspects of this industry and everything that needs to be revamped about it from the shelter system to breeders to everything else is going to keep me busy enough over the next several decades that I'm never going to have to worry about losing interest."

"Eventually, I'd like to get into the dog food industry and slowly try to revamp that. The way that dogs are treated in the world, is nowhere near as good as it should be."

We have to say, he looks like he's living his best life!
