Whilst visiting the small town of Tain-l'Hermitage, French President Macron has been slapped across the face by a member of the crowd.
A video of French President Emmanuel Macron getting slapped by a member of the public has gone viral on Twitter.
2 people were arrested in Southeast France after President Macron was slapped by a man in the crowd in Tain-l'Hermitage. The clip, which is being circulated across Twitter, shows a member of the public in a green t-shirt shouting "Down with Macronia" in French, before slapping him in the face.
Security quickly tackled the man to the ground and took the president away to safety.
French Prime Minister Jean Castex has called the incident an affront to democracy. He addressed the National Assembly, stating that while democracy encouraged debate and legitimate disagreement, "it must never, in any case, mean violence, verbal aggression, and physical attack."
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the far-left La France Insoumise party, and member of the National Assembly has tweeted his "solidarity with the President."
While the identity of the man and his motives remain unknown, he is heard shouting "Montjoie Saint Denis," while he slaps Mr. Macron. This was the battle cry of the French armies when the country was still a monarchy.
He has been the subject of much controversy.
Emmanuel Macron is a French politician who has been serving as the president of France since 2017. Though he began his career in good popularity, it fell quite considerably in 2018 due to severe dissatisfaction with his presidency, highlighted by the "Yellow Vests Movement." This was a movement initially sparked by rising fuel prices, and a high cost of living, they also claimed that there was a disproportionate burden of government tax reforms on the middle and working classes. His approval ratings raised during the pandemic, however only to fifty percent.
