In today's Instagram-obsessed society, body positivity is more important than ever before.

The last couple of years has seen body expectations in young girls and women become gradually more unrealistic, with photoshopped images of "natural," yet stick-thin, and flawless models giving these girls and women an unhealthy relationship with their own bodies.

As a result, body image has become a major issue in today's society.

With a never-ending choice of Instagram filters and photoshop tools making it easier than ever to make yourself look perfectly flawless in your photos, it's no wonder that more and more people are having issues with their body image.

Standards have been set unrealistically high.

Because, come on. We all have cellulite, we all have rolls of skin, we all have blemishes. Basically, we all have imperfections, because we're all human.

And weight is perhaps the biggest issue.

With these unrealistic body standards comes the weight problem. The glamorous magazine covers over the years have fed us the ideology that, to be beautiful, you have to be a size zero. No question about it.

However, women are now fighting back against this stigma.

More models than ever before are showing off their perfect interceptions, and are accepting themselves for who they really are.

Our society is more empowered than ever before...

And it's only going to get better.

Recently, 2 best friends have gone the extra mile to spread the message of body positivity.

The women just so happen to be completely different in both body shape and size, and they decided to use this to their advantage.

Denise Mercedes, left, and Maria Castellanos, right, have been best friends for 5 years now.

The women, who both share a love for fashion, are completely opposite sizes - Mercedes is a size fourteen while Castellanos is a size two.

But this size difference hasn't stopped them from sharing their outfits...

The friends love to shop together, and their Instagram accounts are adorned with photos of them modeling the same items of clothing.

But Mercedes wanted to take things a step further.

Mercedes has always been confident and comfortable in her own skin, and she loves taking to the beach in stylish bikinis.

So she wanted nothing more than to pose in matching bikinis with her best friend.

Speaking to Insider, she explained: "I wanted to get the same swimsuit as Maria because I wanted to showcase that we are both completely different sizes, yet we are both wearing a bikini and we both look really good. The audience was so excited and they loved the idea."

However, Castellanos wasn't so confident.

On her uncertainty, she said: "I didn't feel secure enough to put myself out there. I'm the one who has that ideal 'summer body,' but I was still feeling very insecure. Denise was the one who had the confidence and she helped me."

Castellano had always opted for one-piece swimsuits as a result of her insecurities...

But Mercedes wanted to build her confidence. "She was like, 'Listen, you really don't have to look a certain way to rock this swimsuit. She inspired me to wear it, and once we took the pictures, I felt so confident standing right next to her and she felt the same way."

It took a lot of persuasion and encouragement...

But Castellano finally agreed to wear a matching bikini with her best friend... And they both looked amazing.

Their first photo featured them both wearing the same red bikini...

And they perfectly demonstrated that any body shape can look incredible on the beach.

And, their photoshoot was that successful...

That they decided to buy another set of matching bikinis.

Here, they both rocked high-waist, off-the-shoulder leopard print bikinis...

And, as expected, they both completely worked it.

They even make TikTok videos that show off their latest beachwear finds.

"Every time we do one of these [TikTok videos we are in party mode and we just feel so good," Castellanos said. "We are always complimenting one another, and we are here to be supportive," Mercedes added.

Of course, the women have experienced their fair share of hate.

Mercedes recalled how 2 men once called out hurtful words while Castellanos was taking photos of her in a bikini - but, thankfully, she hasn't let that stop her from posing in swimsuits.

Mercedes just hopes that her photos can help spread the message of body positivity to other women of a similar size.

"I can walk around in a bikini and not feel like I'm being looked at anymore. When I do publish photos wearing a bikini, I'm hoping people will say, 'Wow, she looks really good in a bikini and if she can wear a bikini, then so can I.'"
