A mom has shared her incredible birth story that saw her 9-year-old daughter help to deliver her new baby sister at home when she suddenly went into very speedy labor.
9-year-old Aakayla Gunn helped deliver her baby sister at home as her mother, Angelica, a nurse and certified doula, coached her through it.
Angelica had begun feeling contractions when she called for her husband, Caleb, to come home from work ahead of the birth.
Caleb left work straight away in the hope that he would arrive home as soon as possible but he soon found himself stuck in traffic leaving his wife to give birth with the help of their daughter.
Angelica spoke with FOX 4 Kansas City to explain the situation and said: "I screamed for Aakayla to come in.
"I was just like, 'You have to look. Something's happening. Is her head coming out?' And she's like, 'I can't look.' And I'm like, 'You have to.'"
During her very short labor, Angelica was on the phone with both her sister and paramedics while Aakayla did her best to help her mom.
Preparing for the baby's arrival, Aakayla ran to grab a towel, and then within just 2 pushes, Angelica gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
Aubree Rose arrived in the world after being caught by her big sister, Aakayla.
Aakayla also spoke with Fox 4 where she described the situation as "fun."
"It was fun. She looked really pretty," Aakayla said.
Caleb also added: "We may have a doctor on our hands. Already delivering babies at 9! Let's go, Aakayla!"
Thankfully, both mom and baby Aubree Rose were healthy following their incredibly unique birth and Aakayla was "not traumatized" by it. "I'm glad that we're both OK and that my daughter's OK, and she's not traumatized by the whole thing. She's pretty excited about it," Angelica said.
While home births aren't the most common of birthing methods - with the majority being totally unexpected - they have proven in the past to be a very safe way of delivering a baby. For instance, there is less chance of the mom and baby catching infections and viruses, and the use of forceful contraptions such as forceps is completely non-existent.
"I think she'll really cherish this for the rest of her life."
