Money doesn't bring you happiness.

Well, it seems that away from the spotlight, Ramsay's life has been marred with tragedy.

And his story just keeps on getting sadder.

Ramsay is one of television's most beloved chefs.

The king of angry cheffing has become well-loved - if not a little feared - for his short temper and no-nonsense cooking style.

Born in Scotland in 1966...

Ramsay earned his stripes in many fine London establishments, before coming to the forefront of foodie TV in the ’90s.

He's one of the most famous chefs on the planet.

He rose to fame in a fly-on-the-wall food documentary called Boiling Point and went on to win a BAFTA for his appearance in Faking It in 2001.

But there are 2 main shows that helped to make Ramsay a household name.

Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares first aired in the UK on Channel 4 in 2004. On the show, Ramsay visited failing restaurants around the world and helped owners to spruce up their businesses in order to turn them into successful establishments.

It aired in the UK also in 2004, and featured Ramsay training ten celebrities to run a successful restaurant in London. The U.S. version of the show began in 2005.

There's no doubt the star possesses a sheer talent in the kitchen.

It's no secret that he is an incredibly gifted chef, with millions of people all over the world clamoring to dine in his infamous restaurants.

Idiot Sandwich, anyone?

When it comes to cooking amazing food, Ramsay isn't afraid to put people well and truly in their place.

And, with his colorful language and explosive temper in the kitchen...

Budding chefs know too well to not get in Ramsay's way.

But this is because he's an expert at what he does...

Which is evident from the huge $15.4 million profit he made last year, despite him working for free!

His chain contains 3 Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as the 1 Michelin-star eatery, Petrus.

But that's not all, he also has Savoy Grill and Gordon Ramsay Plane Food at Heathrow in the UK, as well as 10 other smaller ventures.

And he's not stopping anytime soon, he's actually looking to expand...

Over the next 5 years, he wants to open two-hundred restaurants in North America, Canada, and the Caribbean, as well as two-hundred in Asia, and fifty sites in the UK.

His restaurant chains Bread St Kitchen and Maze are the most popular in the UK.

Brits travel from all across the country to dine in his restaurants.

It's estimated that they spend over £1 million a week eating his food...

With an annual turnover in the UK of £49.3 million.

His rival, Jamie Oliver’s restaurant chain hasn't had the same luck, as it went into administration last year...

All the while Gordon is planning world domination.

If that wasn't enough, he's just signed a $19.5 million deal with Lion Capital LLP...

A British private equity firm who have owned Jimmy Choo, Weetabix, Wagamama, and Kettle Chips.

They're planning on opening his restaurants here in the US...

We can't wait!

On top of all of this, Ramsay is also a family man.

He married his wife, Tana Hutcheson (an ex-teacher), in 1996, and the pair have five children together.

His eldest, Megan Jane, is pictured second from the left.

The twenty-two-year-old is currently studied psychology at Oxford Brooks University in the U.K.

Next in order is second daughter, Holly.

Holly was born on New Year’s Day in the year 2000, making her twenty. She’s currently living between the U.K. and U.S.A to spend time with her family.

Holly is actually a twin.

As you may expect, her fraternal brother, named Jack Scott Ramsay, shares the same birthday, but he is a few minutes younger. Here’s Jack with his famous father in 2013.

Next up we have Matilda.

Born in 2001, Matilda is the second youngest of the Ramsay clan. She seems the most likely to follow in her father’s television-related footsteps and has already had multiple TV appearances including This Morning and Masterchef Junior.

And, finally, we have Oscar.

The tot was born last year and even has his own Instagram account full of adorable snaps.

But, aside from all of Ramsay's fame and fortune...

The star has actually led quite a tragic life.

To start off with, the star had a very violent childhood.

via: Getty Images

In 2007, Gordon Ramsay wrote an in-depth piece for CNN, in which he opened up about some of the issues he and his family had dealt with during his childhood.

In the article, Ramsay explained how his father had been "less than a perfect role model" to him.

His father battled alcoholism and would frequently become violent towards Ramsay's mom.

The star was extremely open and honest in the piece.

via: Getty Images

"Every time he got violent," Ramsay wrote, "any present that my brother, sisters, or I had given mum would be smashed, simply because he knew it belonged to her. There were instances when the police were called to take him away; mum was taken to the hospital while we kids were taken to a children's home."

During his early years, Ramsay and his siblings were moved around to several different homes and schools...

This was often down to his father's jobs - which he often lost. "To this day," Ramsay explained, "I will never understand why mum stayed with him. She deserved so much better and so much more; it still pains me to remember how badly he treated her. I have 4 young children of my own, and I could never see myself behaving the way my father did when I was a child. I want to be a role model for my children and have them look up to me."

As part of the article, Ramsay drew attention to his and his wife's work with the U.K. charity Women's Aid.

"Domestic violence is not identified solely by violent physical abuse; instead, it is defined as physical, sexual, psychological, financial, or emotional violence that takes place in a relationship, intimate or family-oriented," the star stressed.

And that's not the only revelation about Ramsay.

Although he's now one of the world's most famous chefs, Ramsay was once on a very different path.

In an article for The Guardian, Ramsay explained how he was initially slated for a career in soccer.

via: Getty Images

"My uncle Roland took me to my first game at Ibrox," he wrote. "I was seven and I went on his shoulders. The crowd was just phenomenal. We were standing by the terraces and I remember getting slightly nervous, and very scared. Because you just swayed then, you just moved in a sway formation. I think it was against Hearts and it was dirty — I mean very dirty — and Rangers won 1-0. Those games are always going to be dirty for the next century, because it's just an all-blood tie. And I loved it."

Unfortunately, after taking up the sport as a hobby and playing a small number of non-league games, he suffered an injury to his knee.

And despite working his way back up to physical fitness, he was dropped from his team.

Soon after, Ramsay started his first catering course...

And, we all know how that story goes.

But even in adulthood, Ramsay has dealt with tragedy.

via: Getty Images

Over the years, Ramsay's brother Ronnie has endured his own struggles with drugs - something that has had a huge impact on the popular chef.

Ramsay has previously opened up about his brother's addiction to drugs.

via: Getty Images

"I don't think there is any easy drug," he said, "but when you stoop to the depths of her**n, it's very rare you get back. We've done everything we can to help him, now he just sort of binges and disappears so that's just a constant reminder and also being a father of 4 ourselves, you need to be there for them because this stuff is rife."

Ramsay himself has witnessed this darker side of drugs and addiction.

Years earlier, he had lost a colleague to coc**ne. "We had dinner the night before he passed," Ramsay later revealed. "I wish I'd seen signs earlier."

According to Ramsay, hard drugs are rife in the cooking industry.

via: Getty Images

"I saw coc**ne quite early on in my career. I've been served it. I've been given it. I've had my hand shaken and left with little wraps of foil in it. I've been asked to dust coc**ne on top of soufflés, to put it on as icing sugar... [it's] everywhere. It's spiraling out of control."

However, many of Ramsay's recent struggles have come from his father-in-law, Chris Hutcheson.

via: Getty Images

In 2017, Chris Hutcheson Sr, who is the father of Ramsay's wife, Tana,  was arrested and jailed for conspiring with his sons to access Ramsay's firm's computer systems almost two-thousand times.

The 2 sons, Adam and Chris Jr., each worked in IT roles at Gordon Ramsay Holdings Ltd.

While Hutcheson himself had been the company's chief executive, until he was subsequently fired in March 2011.

On 1 day alone, in February 2011, Hutcheson had accessed the company's system six-hundred times...

According to Sky News, Hutcheson and his sons had been attempting to gather information on Ramsay's intellectual property rights, hoping it would give them "the upper hand" in a legal dispute they had with Ramsay at the time.

However, this had an even larger knock-on effect.

Some of the information the trio accessed, including the fact that Ramsay had undergone a hair transplant, ended up being leaked to the national press.

And this isn't the only trouble Ramsay has stumbled into with his father-in-law.

In 2015, Ramsay went to court to allege that Hutcheson had used a "ghost-writing signature machine" without his permission to make him a personal guarantor for the rent of the York & Albany pub in Regent's Park.

Arguing that his signature hadn't been lawfully authorized...

Ramsay took the pub's owner to court, with the aim to be released from the deal. "I am appalled," Ramsay told the court, "at the extent to which Chris used the ghostwriting machine to sign documents ostensibly on my behalf in circumstances where I had no knowledge of the documents that were being 'signed' or the matters to which they referred."

Sadly, the court didn't sway in Ramsay's favor.

The judge dismissed Ramsay's claim, ordering him to pay the pub owner's court costs as well as his own; an amount which came to over $1 million. Ramsay was also made to pay the nearly $1.5 million owed the pub's owner in rent. "Mr. Ramsay's own evidence establishes the very extensive, if not total, trust which Mr. Ramsay placed in Mr. Hutcheson to deal with business affairs on behalf of both the companies and Mr. Ramsay himself," the judge ruled.

But Ramsay has suffered heartbreak even closer to home.

In 2016, Ramsay posted a touching message on Facebook, in which he opened up about the miscarriage he and his wife had suffered.

The move came in the light of a small movement of celebrities who had opened up about losing a child to miscarriage.

Including Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Courteney Cox, Mariah Carey, Pink, and Beyoncé.

Ramsay's contribution was an emotional read.

via: Getty Images

"Hi guys, Tana and I want to thank you so much for your support over the past couple of weeks. We had a devastating weekend as Tana has sadly miscarried our son at 5 months. We're together healing as a family, but we want to thank everyone again for all your amazing support and well wishes. I'd especially like to send a big thank you to the amazing team at Portland Hospital for everything they've done. Gx"

But that's far from the only tragic blow Ramsay has been dealt.

via: Getty Images

The star has actually had a brush with death.

The incident occurred while he was filming the hit TV series The F Word.

via: Getty Images

The star lost his footing during a hike in Iceland causing him to fall, descending a rock face.

Ramsay hit the water below, but his heavy boots only pulled him down further.

Despite being a strong swimmer. "I thought I was a goner," Ramsay later said. "They say cats have nine lives. I've had twelve already and I don't know how many more I'll have."

Eventually, Ramsay managed to free himself from his boots and swam back to the surface...

Having spent forty-five seconds underwater.

His crew, who hauled him to safety, thought he had been killed.

Following the terrifying ordeal, Ramsay was treated for a knee injury at his hotel, before undergoing a medical examination in London.

Despite having the tough-guy reputation, Ramsay's emotions were tested back in 2006 when his pet pigs were taken to be slaughtered on that same show.

For a segment on the hit show, Ramsay's pet sows, Trinny and Susannah, were killed — and Ramsay himself watched the entire, harrowing process.

The star apparently looked "pale and shaken," during the process.

Ramsay had raised the pigs for slaughter, but he says it was still difficult to go through. Describing the experience, Ramsay said: "Not pleasant. The whole operation is extraordinary. Quite emotional really. I felt sick as a f**king dog in there. Next, I will think of something really nice to cook with them. But it's not a nice experience."

Channel 4's decision to air the slaughter was met with praise from the animal rights group PETA.

In a statement, the organization said: "Paul McCartney once said that if slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian. If The F-Word slaughter turns out to be as graphic and gory as we hear it is, then these animals' deaths will not have been completely in vain, since they will turn many compassionate people into vegetarians."

So, it's safe to say...

While Ramsay has enjoyed many successes in his life, away from the spotlight, he has had his fair share of struggles. For more on the star, scroll on to read why his $71 meal has been blasted by fans...
