Grant first received attention for his roles in acclaimed period dramas like Maurice in 1987, for which he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor.

He recently spoke to PEOPLE about his time on set with the young actor, admitting he was apprehensive about working with him.

“I was a bit nervous of him,” Grant said. “I don’t like people who are too successful, and I thought his career had gone a bit too well,”

“But I did warm to him. He gave me good gossip,” the 63-year-old joked.

In Wonka, Chalamet stars in the titular role of a magical chocolate-maker who has run-ins with an orange-and-green Oompa Loompa, played by Grant.

Unfortunately for Timothée, he “didn’t get the deluxe Hugh Grant experience” since the actor delivered his motion-capture CGI performance off-camera.

“But he was close by in a tent,” Chalamet said of his co-star.

Grant went on to explain why he couldn’t be on set with the star, saying he was “too big” to make it there.

“I couldn’t be on the set because I’m too big. But I was in a tent just nearby with my helmet on with all the cameras,” he revealed. “A highly complicated business.”

Surprisingly enough, the Love Actually star didn’t seem to have that great of a time playing an Oompa Loompa.

In fact, Grant recently called his Wonka character the role he “hated” the most.

During a press conference for the film, the veteran actor shared his thoughts about the film, and they were anything but positive.

Hugh described the cameras he had to wear on his head for the animators like “crown of thorns, very uncomfortable.”

“I made a big fuss about it,” he admitted. “adding ‘”I couldn’t have hated the whole thing more.”

He went on to say that he also didn’t like what happened to his body during filming.

“And frankly, what I did with my body was terrible, and it’s all been replaced with an animator,” Grant complained.

He continued, “It’s very confusing, with CGI now, you can’t tell what’s going on.”

Despite his gripes with the tole, Grant did admit that he enjoyed “messing around and trying new lines.”

Still, the acting vet probably won’t reprise his role as an Oompa Loompa any time soon.

“I slightly hate [making films] but I have lots of children and need money,” he said during the press conference.

Chalamet joked about Grant’s cynical outlook during their interview with people, saying, “Before I met Hugh, I thought he was wonderfully talented and handsome and very good-looking.”

Then after I met him, my impression crumbled,” he said with a laugh as Grant joked back, “This broken bitter old man.”
