I’ve been watching all of the October Prime Day deals that are being quietly rolled out before the big “Prime Big Deal Days” starts on Oct 10-11th.
I got to thinking, are these actually good deals? Or are they just trying to make us think we’re saving money when in reality they just jacked up the price and then discounted it again to make us feel good for paying the same as everyone else?
So then I got to math-ing… (did you know that in the UK they say “maths”?). This part was hard, but I actually looked back at our records for the prices on the top-selling products. This isn’t necessarily a definitive list, but we’ve tracked the prices on a lot of products, so we can actually see the historical averages for thousands of items for sale on Amazon.
You know what I found? Some of these early deals are actually not that great. I left those off this list. I put ’em all in a spreadsheet (again, maths), and I filtered out anything where the current deal price isn’t LOWER than the average price of that product from the last year. And that’s saying something, because there were lots of deals in the last year. So, for these products to stand out, they have to be selling them for EVEN LESS than the average across all of that time. Pretty cool, huh? Now I just need to write to my 4th-grade teacher and tell him I DO use math(s) in my work!
