Yesterday, Idris Elba became the latest celebrity to confirm that he has been infected with the deadly coronavirus.

The actor made his announcement through a video on his Twitter page, but now, he's posted a worrying update.

Let's start from the beginning.

The deadly coronavirus, or COVID-19, as medical experts are referring to it, has taken our planet hostage, and is showing no signs of letting go anytime soon.

But what exactly is COVID-19, and just how dangerous is it?

According to the World Health Organization, COVID-19 is a new strain of coronaviruses that had not been previously been identified in humans.

The virus primarily affects the respiratory system.

And common symptoms include fever, coughing, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties.

But, in more severe cases...

And in patients who are elderly and have existing health issues, the virus can lead to pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.

It's a dire situation.

And many have been asking the same thing - Where did this virus actually come from?

Well, the virus is believed to have originated in Wuhan, China.

On December 31st, 2019, China alerted the World Health Organization of several flu-like cases in Wuhan.

And where did it come from?

Many different theories have been proposed, but it is now widely believed to have originated from the sale of meat from wild animals, especially bats, where the virus has been discovered in the past.

And, despite infected people being quarantined...

The virus was alarmingly quick to spread, with cases being reported as far away as Thailand just one week later.

It only took a month for the World Health Organization to declare a global emergency...

Which was done in an attempt to combat the virus and enable countries to put in strict measures to prevent any further spread.

But these attempts were to little avail.

Because, fast forward 3 months, and nearly every major country in the world has been infected by the virus, with some of the worst affected being Japan, South Korea, Russia, Italy, Iran, and Spain.

World leaders have been left with little choice but to bring their countries to a total stand-still...

And many have banned large and crowded events, and any travel to and from infected countries.

Italy has even gone into total lockdown...

Leaving their streets completely deserted.

And it didn't take long for the virus to reach us here in the States.

Our first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Washington in late January after a citizen returned from a trip to China.

And, since then, the numbers have been rising at a frightening pace.

Since the first COVID-19 patient in Washington, there have been 4,743 more confirmed cases across the country and ninety-three deaths.

Several cities have declared states of emergencies...

And, on Friday, President Trump declared a national emergency to combat the coronavirus pandemic, freeing up $50 billion in federal funding and promising a screening website and drive-by tests.

His move came after the World Health Organization confirmed COVID-19 as a pandemic last week.

FYI... A pandemic is a disease that is spreading in multiple countries around the world at the same time.

He also announced a temporary travel ban...

Which prohibits any travel between the United States and any European country, including the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The virus is notoriously easy to catch...

And it isn't making any exceptions. People of all races, ages, and social classes are reportedly being infected with the virus, and the rich and famous certainly aren't any exceptions.

Several celebrities have now been infected with the virus.

Hollywood legend, Tom Hanks, was one of the first famous faces to announce that he had tested positive for COVID-19. About he and his wife's diagnosis, he explained via Instagram, "We felt a bit tired like we had colds, and some body aches... To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive."

And, following on from Hanks' shock announcement, another famous face has announced their diagnosis.

British actor and D.J. Idris Elba, has become the latest celebrity to be infected with COVID-19.

Last night, Idris took to Twitter to announce his diagnosis.

In a video, where he was accompanied by his wife, Sabrina, Idris explained how he had actually experienced no symptoms. “I had no symptoms, but I got tested because I realized I was exposed to someone who had also tested positive."

And, sadly, his hunch was correct.

via: Twitter

“This morning I tested positive for COVID-19. I feel ok, I have no symptoms so far but have been isolated since I found out about my possible exposure to the virus."

He took his diagnosis as an opportunity to remind his followers to be cautious...

via: Twitter

"This is serious. Now's the time to really think about social distancing, washing your hands and, beyond that, there are people out there who aren't showing symptoms, and that can easily spread it."

And urged people to stick together.

via: Twitter

"Look, we live in a divided world right now. We can all feel it, it's been bulls***. But now's the time for solidarity, and now's the time for thinking about each other."

And, most importantly, he doesn't want people to panic.

You can watch his full announcement here.

People were quick to send their love and well wishes to the actor...

Including our very own Ellen DeGeneres, who wrote: "Sending you so much love, Idris."

And many praised him for raising awareness.

Like Idris, not everyone actually presents symptoms of the virus, so it is still important to self isolate, even if you don't feel unwell.

However, others couldn't help but notice one thing...

His wife Sabrina, who hasn't been diagnosed with the virus, remained close by his side throughout the video, therefore putting herself at risk of catching the illness herself.

Many Twitter users called for Sabrina to self-isolate herself...

Because, surely, she is putting herself in danger by remaining in close proximity to him?

But, if Idris Elba was my husband...

We wouldn't be leaving his side either. Obviously.

But maybe it isn't too dangerous for Sabrina...

Many people have been encouraged to self-isolate as a household, unless a family member suffers from an existing health condition.

And, considering that Sabrina is in full health...

Her chances of developing any major illnesses or side effects from the virus are slim.

But now Elba has taken to Twitter to share a worrying update.

It seems the star isn't quite as relaxed as he initially seemed ...

He shared two videos updating fans.

via: Twitter

"Yes, of course, I’m worried. I’m worried about having the virus."

But that's not all.

Because Elba suffers an underlying health condition that could cause coronavirus complications down the line, too. "I’m worried about having asthma and how that can make things really complicated for me really quickly."

"I’m really worried about whats going on in the world, if I’m honest, I’m worried about how we’re dealing with it."

You and us both, Idris ... And he's not the only star affected by the current pandemic. Scroll on for the full list of celebrities diagnosed or in quarantine.
