Now, Lovato has always been refreshingly candid.
And is often praised for her honest and unfiltered approach to topics such as mental health.
Lovato also has a history of substance abuse...
And recently revealed that she is a sufferer of bipolar disorder, an eating disorder, and self-harm.
She has struggled with drug and alcohol addictions since the age of seventeen...
And she was first admitted into rehab at the age of eighteen.
Lovato opened up about her mental health for the first time in this infamous interview 9 years ago.
While being interviewed on Good Morning America the star was honest about her mental health struggles, with this interview marking the first time she ever opened up about what had been going on behind closed doors.
And as the years have passed, Lovato has decided to speak out about her struggles more and more.
In 2017, she released the YouTube documentary, Simply Complicated.
It followed her day-to-day life and she spoke very candidly about her past drug addiction, battle with her weight, and taking control of her life.
Lovato had previously been sober for nearly 6 years, though her battle with an eating disorder is still ongoing.
"Food is still the biggest challenge in my life," she said in the film after she admitted to relapsing and purging that year.
The star has also admitted that her "destructive behavior" stems from her eating disorder.
Her vulnerability and honesty are perhaps why fans feel so connected to Lovato...
Because anyone who has ever gone through this kind of darkness in their life can relate to the singer's own journey.
However, Demi Lovato has made a few mistakes along the way...
The former Disney actress has always seemed to be entangled in one controversy or another.
Remember when she posted about her controversial trip to I*real?
This post caused so much outrage online due to the ongoing conflict between the I*raeli government and the people of Palestine.
She wrote this in her lengthy post:
"There is something absolutely magical about Israel. I've never felt such a sense of spirituality or connection to God…something I've been missing for a few years now. Spirituality is so important to me…to be baptized in the Jordan river – the same place Jesus was baptized – I've never felt more renewed in my life."
After receiving some intense backlash, she looked into the issue...
And later admitted that she hadn't done her research before accepting the offer to visit the country where such tragedies were happening and apologized to the people she'd hurt with her actions.
But that wasn't the last we'd see of Lovato's antics...
Remember her post a couple of hours after the Capitol Riots on January 6th? No? Let me refresh your memory.
The singer's heart seemed to be in the right place... But her words... Yikes.
My heart is broken. It makes me to sad to believe how naive I was to think this couldn’t possibly happen, and yet it did. Here we are. For everyone in my comments saying “where’s d7” or wanting me to sing instead of speaking up about what needs to change in this country... pic.twitter.com/md5XPFmj2B— Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) January 7, 2021
After seeing the carnage left behind after Trump supporters decided to storm the Capitol before Joe Biden's inauguration, she posted a tweet to convey her anger.
While most of it seemed pretty standard, the last sentence left people confused.
THIS IS WHY I POST AS MUCH AS I DO. THIS IS WHY I CARE. THIS CANNOT HAPPEN ANY FUCKING MORE. I’m angry, embarrassed and ashamed.— Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) January 7, 2021
I’m in the studio working on something special after today’s assault on democracy.#impeachtrumptonight
"I'm in the studio working on something special after today's assault on democracy," she wrote.
Was this meant to be a shameless plug for a new song or was she that out of touch with reality that she thought a song about the "assault on democracy" would fix everything?
baby i love u and ik ur heart is in the right place but music is not really the solution right now— 𝐚𝐧𝐚 🦋 (@g0ldenlovato) January 7, 2021
Your guess is as good as mine.
And don't even get us started on her post about gender reveals being "transphobic."
We'll give her the benefit of the doubt because it seems as though she's now trying to be the best version of herself she can be.
And recently, it has really been shining through via her confidence.
In an interview with Joe Rogan, Lovato discussed her sexuality proudly, something she was previously more hesitant to do.
While discussing her romantic life and the prospect of having children, she said this:
"I used to. I think if anything I want to adopt. I was engaged to a man last year. I totally thought I'd be married, maybe pregnant by now. And that's not the case."
"I also don't know if I'm going to end up with a guy, so I can't really see myself maybe getting pregnant."
And later added that she's "so fluid now."
"I'm so fluid now - and a part of the reason why I am so fluid is because I was super closeted off."
Rogan then clarified if that meant she was pansexual to which she agreed, saying:
"Yeah, I like anything really," she replied.
For those of you that might not be aware, being pansexual means you're not limited in terms of biological sex, gender, or gender identity.
It's different from bisexuality as people that identify as bi are only attracted to males or females.
Of course, upon hearing the news, kind messages poured in from fans:
Apparently Demi Lovato has come out as pansexual and idk why but that makes me happy good for her 💖💛💙— Roxy (@ShyTinieGremlin) March 29, 2021
But of course, some people had problems with her "coming out" as pan.
Gotta love cis people who only date the opposite sex coming out as liking "anything(?)"— ▪️◽◼️◻️◾▫️ (@Herr_woot) March 30, 2021
For the first time I feel nervous for posting here. I read that Demi Lovato came out as pansexual and I've seen some disrespectful comments towards pan people on my tl. Feeling invalidated or being randomly called biphobic or transphobic is something I'm not gonna accept here.— marina🧷 (@dayavelour) March 29, 2021
Regardless, we're proud of her for being so brave and confident about her sexual identity.
