New year... New James Bond! Daniel Craig announced that the newest 2020 movie, No Time To Die, will be his last stint as the 007 agent, leaving just one question... Who will be playing the next 007?

There have been many speculations over the gender and race of the next James Bond, and now one actor has thrown their hat into the ring...

James Bond is an iconic figure.

The 007 agent dates all the way back to 1953 after a series of books were created and published by British author, Ian Fleming.

Fleming went on to write twelve 007 novels...

And when he died in 1964, his legacy of work was recognized and was to be later adapted onto the big screen... creating the James Bond that we all know and love to this day.

The first Bond movie came in 1962...

Dr. No saw the late Sean Connery step into the shoes of James Bond, and he played the role of the 007 agent for 7 of the movies, including From Russia With Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), and Diamonds Are Forever (1971).

The next James Bond would be David Niven.

Niven only starred in one of the movies, Casino Royale, in 1967 and he passed over the tuxedo to George Lazenby in 1969.

After Lazenby's few years as the 007 agent...

Iconic Hollywood actors such as Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan went on to play the role.

Daniel Craig took on the role of a lifetime back in 2006...

His first stint as Bond was in the reboot of Casino Royale, and despite starring in only 4 Bond movies, Craig has become the longest-serving 007 agent for fourteen years.

The entire world very quickly fell in love with Craig...

And it's really not hard to see why.

He has become the face of the iconic franchise...

And No Time To Die, that is coming in 2021, will be Craig's fifth movie as the superstar agent.

But Craig recently made an announcement...

And that was that this will be his last ever movie as James Bond.

He is officially retiring from the undercover spy life...

And that left us with just one question... who will replace him?

Fans quickly began speculating...

And a lot of people began pitching the idea that the next James Bond should be a woman.

It is 2020, after all...

But a lot of people were against the idea of changing James Bond's character after being such a significant figure for 6 decades.

Craig's wife even had her say...

“Why not create your own story rather than jumping onto the shoulders and being compared to all those other male predecessors?" Rachel Weisz said in a 2018 interview. “Women are really fascinating and interesting, and should get their own stories."

So, the idea of a female Bond was looking very much off the cards.

But it has to be said that the actors who have played the 007 agent in the past have all lacked one thing... and that's diversity.

It is very noticeable...

All of the James Bond actors have been white, and many are hoping for this to be changed for the next movie.

007 producer Barbara Broccoli previously gave us an insight into this problem...

Broccoli and fellow Bond producer Michael G. Wilson told Variety that the search for the next Bond was put on hold as the team were focused on finishing No Time to Die.

Broccoli is certain of one thing.

"He can be of any color, but he is male," she explained.

She believes that women are far more interesting than taking on a male character...

"I believe we should be creating new characters for women - strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that", she went on to say.

Broccoli has always believed in this...

Speaking to The Guardian back in 2018, she said, "Bond is male. He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male."

Why not just create more female characters?

"And that’s fine. We don’t have to turn male characters into women. Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters," she went on to say.

Well, there have been many rumors over her will be taking over the reins from Craig...

And for fans, it's a big deal. After all, they're big shoes to fill.

One of the biggest contenders was Richard Madden.

The actor and star of BBC's nail-biting drama, Bodyguard,  has really gotten people talking recently, including Broccoli herself. In fact, at the time,  The Daily Mail even reported: “Bond bosses are on the brink of approaching the Bodyguard star."

Another star rumored to be stepping into Craig's shoes was Lashana Lynch.

Lynch is already confirmed to be starring in the highly-anticipated movie, but movie insiders apparently tipped that the star was the new Bond. It certainly would have been a much-needed shakeup to have a female bond, and given the fact that the Killing Eve's head writer, Phoebe-Waller-Bridge, is penning the new script, fans thought it was pretty likely that Lynch would be the new face of Bond. That being said, Broccoli has pretty much shattered any hope of their being a female Bond.

And now another name has been thrown into the mix.

With a young star expressing interest in the role ...

John Boyega has expressed his interest this week.

"Ooh! Hey, listen. Steve McQueen directing? Let’s do this!" he said.

"We can show them something different."

"We [would] still bring that sophistication."

"James Bond has to be James Bond."

"But we could do something with that."

For some, he's an exciting choice.

Although there are still some naysayers who aren't keen on updating the Bond character.

What do you think of Boyega in the role?
