Kamala Harris has become the first sitting Vice President to march in a Pride event.
It wasn't expecting - but Kamala Harris made a surprise drop into the Capitol Pride Walk and Rally in Washington, D.C. on Saturday. The VP walked for about a block, speaking with others along the route.
While Harris certainly wasn't there for long, it was long enough to make her the first sitting VP to march in a Pride event.
Harris also called for the approval of the Equality Act.
While she was there, Harris called for the approval of the Equality Act and said President Joe Biden's administration is determined to move forward on LGBTQ+ rights.
"We need to make sure that our transgender community and our youth are all protected."
@VP to the crowd: “We still have so much to do. We celebrate all the accomplishments. Finally marriage is the law of the land. We need to make sure that our transgender community are all protected. There is so much more work to do and I know we are committed.” pic.twitter.com/Mk3sS5yoPq— Eugene Daniels (@EugeneDaniels2) June 12, 2021
We need, still, protections around employment and housing. There is so much more work to do, and I know we are committed.
She was also sporting a T-shirt which read: "Love is love."
She took part in the event with the Second Man, Doug Emhoff. Emhoff wore a T-shirt reading: "Love first."
The secret service agent trying not to look like a secret service agent, looks soooo much like a secret service agent. 🤣🤣🤣🤣— Demetrius Leach (@coachleach32) June 12, 2021
Harris and her husband were very well received by the crowd and on social media, despite some pointing out that Harris was only there for such a short period of time.
However it was their secret service agent who really didn't seem happy about Harris taking a stroll... And in trying not to look like a secret service agent, well he drew a lot of attention to himself!
secret service is like if I just wear this bowling shirt I’ll blend in https://t.co/AQo9aB9rKQ— Chelsea Cirruzzo (@ChelseaCirruzzo) June 12, 2021
Yeah, she was only there for a brief amount of time, and yes she only walked for one block, but fair play to the VP for actually making an effort - and bigger props to the secret service agent whose heart palpitations triggered the Richter Scale.
