If there’s one person that comes to mind when thinking of a celebrity with a controversial past, it’s surely Chris Brown — although, maybe controversial is a little bit of a kind way of putting it.
This week, Brown won an award at the AMAs…
And many audience members were not too thrilled.
But Kelly Rowland jumped to his defense…
And the internet does not know what to think!
“Chris is an excellent entertainer well deserved good job, Kelly,” wrote one fan
“I am Team Kelly all day. And even though I am not a fan of Chris Brown, I can understand her wanting to gather the crowd. Because what you are not fixing to do is 1. Boo anybody while I’m up talking, and 2. Boo someone that I (she clearly) has respect for,” added another.

Born in Tappahannock, Virginia, in 1989, Chris Brown made a big name for himself with a selection of catchy R&B hits such as “No Air”, “With You”, and “Forever.”
Brown’s been the recipient of many awards, including 4 Billboard Music Awards and a Grammy.
He also holds the seventh place for most entries in the Billboard Hot 100, with ninety-one.
Brown managed to hugely up his profile by dating pop superstar, Rihanna.
Here, they’re pictured in happy times — but their relationship has been marred by one major incident.
A violent altercation in 2009.
This left Rihanna with severe injuries, which ended up requiring hospitalization.
The news of this incident blew up, leaving many fearing for Rihanna and disgusted by Brown.
And for many once-Brown fans, this was the final nail in the coffin.
In spite of his clear musical talent, he just wasn’t the kind of person that you’d want to show support to.
This incident wasn’t all.
Even though there’s one overriding incident that people point to as proof of Brown’s violent behavior, it’s clear that it exists as a part of a much wider (and more frightening) pattern.
After the Rihanna split, Brown began dating American actress and model Karrueche Tran who is best known for her roles in the web series, The Bay and TNT series, Claws.
They had a very tumultuous, on-off relationship that spanned over the next 3 years — with plenty of incredibly poor behavior on Brown’s part.
Alongside numerous acts of undoubtable infidelity, there were yet more allegations of violence and abuse lobbied against Brown after the 2 parted ways.
During their relationship, Brown also had a brief renaissance with Rihanna, when the pair dated for a second time in 2013.
But Tran stayed with Brown in spite of this infidelity.
During his relationship with Tran, Brown also fathered a child with another woman. Royalty Brown was born to Nia Guzman in 2015.
But the issues in the couple’s relationship appear to run far deeper than infidelity. In fact, it seems that Brown had fallen into repeating some highly dangerous patterns.
Tran filed legal documents against Brown, including claims that he physically assaulted her and threatened her with death.
Tran explained to Wendy Williams that “It came to a point where I felt like I needed to protect my safety.”
In June 2017, a judge ruled that the temporary restraining order should stay in place for the next five years to protect Tran’s safety.
Although his career has survived dozens of unthinkable allegations, he still appears to be flourishing.
Including a scheduled appearance at this weekend’s AMAs.
However, the performance, which was supposed to be a tribute to Michael Jackson, was reportedly canceled at the last minute.
“WOULDVE been the ama performance but they canceled me for reasons unknown,” Brown ranted on Instagram.
However, Brown did end up winning the AMA for Favourite Male R&B Artist.
But he wasn’t there to collect it.
Instead, his award was collected by Kelly Rowland.
Rowland said: “Now, Chris Brown is not here tonight so I’m accepting the award on his behalf.”
And the crowd erupted in boos and jeers.
Rowland then said: “Excuse me. Chill out.”
