Another day, another Kardashian scandal.
This week, the latest member of the family to face the heat of the internet is Kim, who has unintentionally been turned into a meme after she decided to share the snaps from her lavish “private island” birthday party.
While millions of people still remain affected – both physically and financially – by the coronavirus pandemic, the infamous reality star decided it was a good time to share the details from her fortieth birthday celebrations in a lengthy Twitter thread.
Let’s just say a private island, dozens of her close friends and a maddeningly patronizing message to those “less fortunate” than her were involved.
Did she really think that, amid one of the worst pandemics of our century, people would really be wanting to see the photos from her outrageously lavish birthday party?
And, as the people of Twitter do so well, she was quick to be turned into a meme.
And, while some of these famous faces used the time to do some good – whether it be sending encouraging messages or providing some much-needed aid for those less fortunate than them – others went for a slightly different approach.
We all remember when singer, Sam Smith, shared in a post that his since been deleted, their stages of “quarantine meltdown” in their lavish North London home.
Because, apparently, quarantining in a huge mansion can take a huge toll on someone’s mental health.
And we all cringed in horror when Ellen DeGeneres gave an insight into her quarantine.
The TV host compared her self-isolation to “being in jail.” I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of any jails with twelve lavish bedrooms, can you?
The actress gathered an army of her A-list pals and put together a rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine.”
“We are in this together, we will get through it together. Let’s imagine together. Sing with us. All love to you, from me and my dear friends.”
And even today, many remember the celebrity cover of “Imagine” as perhaps the lowest point of lockdown.
Kim Kardashian is the latest celebrity to face the wrath of the internet for her sheer tactlessness.
And, regardless of the ongoing pandemic, she decided to celebrate it in style.
I mean a “surprising dozens of her closest friends and family members with a lavish trip to a private island” kind of style.
Alongside captions that expressed her “gratefulness” for her wealth and privilege.
“40 and feeling so humbled and blessed. There is not a single day that I take for granted, especially during these times when we are all reminded of the things that truly matter.”
Along with the gushing caption:
“For my birthday this year, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend it than with some of the people who have helped shaped me into the woman I am today.”
“Before COVID, I don’t think any of us truly appreciated what a simple luxury it was to be able to travel and be together with family and friends in a safe environment.”
“After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.”
“We danced, rode bikes, swam near whales, kayaked, watched a movie on the beach and so much more. I realize that for most people, this is something that is so far out of reach right now, so in moments like these, I am humbly reminded of how privileged my life is. #thisis40.”
Her announcement was met with incredulity, with many in a state of sheer disbelief with Kim’s idea of being “humble.”
Maybe Kim really should “stay in her bubble” and leave the rest of us to the “real world”?
People started sharing photos of more menacing “private islands”, alongside her patronizing caption… And the results have been perfect.
There have been references to the film Parasite – a sinister metaphor for the division between social classes – to the Game of Thrones bloodbath episode, “The Red Wedding”, and to Midsommar, a movie about a cult.
