According to Forbes, she was named the youngest self-made billionaire in 2019, thanks to the success of Kylie Cosmetics.

However, there has been a lot of debate about whether she can truly be considered “self-made,” given her privileged upbringing and the fame she had before starting her business.

Her net worth took a significant leap in 2020 when she sold a 51% stake in Kylie Cosmetics to beauty giant Coty Inc. for a staggering $600 million.

The move further solidified her place in the beauty industry and just how valuable her company had become.

Kylie is one of the most recognizable names in the beauty industry today, but it wasn’t always this way.

When she first hinted at launching her own cosmetics line, many dismissed it as just another celebrity vanity project, she told Interview magazine.

They thought it was a fleeting idea that would fizzle out as fast as it came.
Kris wasn’t all that convinced

But guess what? Even her mom had reservations about the investment, even though Kylie was determined to turn her dream into reality.

“You were a young teenager that was experimenting with your own makeup. What was the biggest challenge from taking that to actual reality?” actress Jennifer Lawrence quizzed Kylie during their conversation for the mag.

“Proving people wrong was a challenge, but so was building it from the ground up,” Kylie responded.

“It was me and my mom and we never made a makeup line,” she continued. “We didn’t know where to start. We didn’t have anyone helping us. And my mom thought I was going to be stuck with lip kits in my garage for the rest of my life.”

And it was Kris who had to have a serious conversation with Kylie after she decided to buy “the minimum” of 5,000 lip kits when she launched her business.

“She was like, ‘You better be ready, Kylie, because you might have a lot of lip kits in your garage for the rest of your life, so you better love these colors,’” she recalled.
Kylie proved everybody wrong

The journey was not easy and was filled with challenges. She started her cosmetics line right out of her garage! Yes, you heard me right – garage – where all her beauty supplies were being stocked.

Her humble beginnings were far from glamorous by the sound of things, especially because there seemed to be a lot of doubt about whether it would be a success or not.

Kylie wasn’t the one doubting herself, but the people around her apparently were.
She’s now a billionaire!

Kylie’s biggest challenge wasn’t getting the financing or building the business from scratch.

It was dealing with the skepticism and doubt from people close to her.

It can be tough when your own family doesn’t believe in your dream.
