The thirty-three-year-old actress was confirmed as missing last week after being in a boat with her 4-year-old son in Lake Piru, California. Tributes have been flooding in for Rivera and it's safe to say that the world is truly heartbroken over this loss.

But firstly, let's start from the beginning.

Rivera was best known for her role in Glee, and she portrayed the role of the sharp-witted cheerleader, Santana Lopez.

Santana, who initially came across as cold-hearted and vicious, became a prominent character in the series...

And she went on to appear in most episodes across all of the 6 seasons.

Following on from her Glee success, Rivera ventured into the world of music.

In 2011, it was announced that the actress had signed a deal with Colombia Records to produce a solo album, and her debut single, "Sorry" featured the rapper, Big Sean, who she went on to have a brief romance with.

Sadly, her music career never really took off...

So instead, Rivera resorted back to her skills as an actress and went on to appear in a handful of different movies and TV series, including At The Devil's Door and Devious Maids.

But, in more recent years, Rivera had been focusing on something else...

With her now ex-husband, Ryan Dorsey, Rivera had a son, Josey, in 2015, and he had been the apple of her eye ever since.

Despite her divorce from Josey's father in 2018, Rivera had agreed to joint custody...

And she threw herself into motherhood, devoting most of her time to raising her son.

The actress posted this photo last week...

The post shows a tender moment between her and her son, alongside the caption, "Just the two of us."

But just hours after her heartwarming post, tragedy struck.

While out vacationing with Josey along California's Lake Piru, Rivera went missing. The actress had rented a pontoon boat on Wednesday afternoon but 3 hours later, another boater raised the alarm after seeing the vessel drifting and Josey sleeping alone on board. The child was reportedly unharmed.

Upon arrival, the police found Rivera's car parked nearby...

And her lifejacket still onboard the boat. It was later found out that Rivera and her son had been swimming in the lake and authorities strongly suspected a case of drowning.

The search proved to be extremely difficult...

"There’s a lot of challenges in a reservoir this size, at times with visibility," Captain Eric Buschow, of the sheriff’s department, said last week. "I don’t have details yet as to the depth of the area where the boat was found or what conditions they’re encountering out there."

Further details about her child's experience were released shortly after her disappearance.

According to TMZ, Rivera’s son had told the authorities that his mom had "jumped into the water but didn't come back up."

Josey's chilling words upon his rescue were released on Thursday...

And he spoke briefly of how his mom pushed him back onto the boat and never returned - essentially saving his life.

And ultimately, the news we have all been dreading came yesterday.

A press conference on Monday confirmed that her body was found floating in the lake following a 6-day search.

She was formally identified...

There have been rumors circulating about the lake in which Rivera lost her life.

Lake Piru is a popular tourist hotspot and is known for its stunning scenery...

But in reality, the vast waterway that claimed Rivera's life is a perilous sea of rip currents and whirlpools that harbor hidden dangers.

The lake has proven to be lethal before...

7 deaths were recorded in the lake between 1994-2000 alone.

According to petitions, locals are too scared to swim there.

The lake reaches depths of up to 150ft and the lake floor is covered with eerie 20ft trees known to entrap bathers. The majority of swimmers who are brave enough to swim in these waters wear life jackets, so it is currently unknown as to why Rivera wasn't wearing one.

The forces of the lake sound utterly terrifying...

There are also submerged cliffs and drop-offs, terrifying rips, and cold columns of water that can prove fatal to even the most experienced swimmer.

People who have previously died in the lake went missing for weeks...

And tragically, some were never found again.

Local rumors that the lake is cursed were fuelled in 1998 when lake employee Arthur Raymond Caladara died in mysterious circumstances.

His body was found floating by the dock after he missed the start of his shift. He was believed to have fallen in and drowned.

Lake Piru is clearly not a force to be messed with...

And as Rivera's tragic story has proven, it isn't worth going in and risking your life.

Rest in Peace, Naya.
