YouTuber turned actress, Liza Koshy, has found herself on the receiving end of some pretty intense backlash after she was accused of “queerbaiting” in a recent Instagram post.
The twenty-five-year-old posted an array of cute and quirky photos with her close girlfriend and trainer, Jenna Willis. But it was more so the caption that had given some of her fans the wrong impression, as Koshy took more of an ambiguously “romantic” twist with it.
“Happy belated birthday baby – I can’t wait to see you at the end of the aisle one day… I just have no idea which role you’ll play.”
Of course, some fans believed that Koshy was using this post as a way of coming out, but others suggested that she was just playing around with her friend. The speculation got so intense that the YouTuber started trending online and that’s when Koshy knew she would have to clear things up.
She went back to Willis’ birthday post and edited the caption writing this: “Happy belated birthday baby. I can’t wait to see you at the end of the aisle one day… I just have no idea which role you’ll play… *** how about my officiant? flower girl? usher? the ridic hot bridesmaid that effortlessly shows up the bride? regardless, you know you’ll be there. check your inbox for the paperless e-vite to my non-existent wedding.”
The re-edit prompted disappointed fans to call out Koshy for her “queerbaiting” behavior.
For those of you that might not be aware, “queerbaiting” is defined as: “When an author/director/etc. gives hints, and clever twists to paint a character as possibly being queer, to satisfy queer audiences, but never outright says they are so they can keep their heterosexual audience [or vice versa].”
So it’s safe to say, fans weren’t impressed.
Thankfully, it seems as though the drama surrounding the scandal is dying down, but I’m sure Koshy will be double thinking her captions from now on!
