That’s the one. It’s one of the most famous flags in the world. One of the most iconic symbols and most recognisable images in the entire universe. Heck, it’s even on the moon.

The flag was born back in the 1700s…

However the latest version, with 50 stars, only came into being in 1960. The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America, and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain, and became the first states in the U.S.

Many are very proud of the Star Spangled Banner.

However, singer Macy Gray is calling for a new United States flag that is a little more diverse. Why? She says that the current flag does not represent all Americans.
Writing for MarketWatch, Gray wrote:
The American flag has been hijacked as code for a specific belief. God bless those believers, they can have it.

She added:

Like the Confederate, it is tattered, dated, divisive, and incorrect. It no longer represents democracy and freedom. It no longer represents ALL of us. It’s not fair to be forced to honor it. It’s time for a new flag.
The Smithsonian documents that the ‘white’ stripes represent purity and innocence. America is great. It is beautiful. Pure, it ain’t. It is broken and in pieces.

And what should the new flag look like?

Well, Gray believes that there should be black and brown stars alongside the white to signify diversity…
