They are truly man's best pals.

In fact, it's basically what unites the internet.

In fact, devastatingly, Thanos was rejected by 4 families due to his poor health - meaning he was heartbreakingly returned to the shelter on multiple occasions.

It looked like Thanos would have to spend his final weeks in an animal shelter...

Until he met 21-year-old Luciano.

It was love at first sight.

But it can't have been easy, knowing that Thanos would sadly pass away in the near future. "I came out with a piece of my heart in my hand," he told Portal Amigo Cao.

At first, Luciano refused to accept that there wasn't more that could be done to save Thanos.

So, in a bid to save his life, he took the pooch to the vet in the hope that they could potentially operate. "I found it hard to adapt to the idea of how little time we will spend together," he explained.

Sadly, he didn't get the news he was hoping for...

"I took him to a stem cell veterinarian to see what we could do, looking for a little more hope (he had been given 40 days to live) and told me that there is no treatment that extends that time."

Nothing else could be done for Thanos.

This left Luciano to simply try to make the most out of what limited time Thanos had left.

And that's exactly what he did...

Luciano says he "pampered" Thanos as much as possible, giving the pooch a new lease of life.

Thanos seemed "happier than ever."

Despite having only just been adopted by Luciano recently, Thanos truly seemed to fall in love with his new companion.

He was even "snuggling and playing" like any other dog.

His terminal illness didn't get in the way.

But of course, Luciano knew Thanos could pass away any day.

Making his love for his new canine pal all the more painful.

But he gave him the best possible farewell gift.

Few people would adopt a terminally ill dog, making Luciano's act of kindness all the more special.

Sadly, Thanos eventually succumbed to his illness.

He passed away earlier this year. Announcing his passing, a heartbroken Luciano wished him a "good trip" on social media, writing: "I will love you forever."

R.I.P Thanos.
