The sad truth…

Though these nominations should be something to celebrate, it’s hard for fans to do that when certain stars were left out of the mix.

The most shocking snub of all is the movie’s titular star, Margot Robbie, and the director, Greta Gerwig, not receiving any nominations.

Though many were excited to see Ryan Gosling nominated for his role as Ken, he was also upset by those who weren’t acknowledged.

Among its eight Oscars nominations, Barbie saw America Ferrera nominated for best supporting actress, along with nos for best original songs for “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?”

The film also received nominations for Best Costume Design and Production Design, with Gerwig nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside co-writer and partner Noah Baumbach, and Robbie nominated for Best Picture alongside partner Tom Ackerley, David Heyman and Robbie Brenner.

Ryan Gosling’s response

Gosling was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and while he is “extremely honored” to be recognized, there’s more to the story.

The actor gave a statement to multiple outlets following his nomination, opening up about his feelings following the big announcement.

“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films,” he began. “And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.”

Gosling continued, “But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.”

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius,” he clarified.

“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

Ryan’s statement continued, “Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history.”

“Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees,” he said of Robbie and Gerwig.

Still, the star made sure to acknowledge his fellow costar, America Ferrera, for her nomination, along with the rest of the crew that was recognized.

“Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film,” Gosling insisted.

The actor’s thoughts surrounding his nomination echo the same sentiments he had recently at the Critics Choice Awards.

Gosling made headlines when “I’m Just Ken” won Best Song at the awards show, visibly shocking the star.

The expression on his face showed just how surprised he was, going absolutely viral, and making the public fall even more in love with him.

Margot speaks out…

Now, Margot Robbie is finally giving her reaction to not being nominated at this year’s Academy Awards.

With how humble the actress has always been, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that she’s more upset by the director being snubbed than she is by her own work being excluded.

“Obviously I think Greta [Gerwig] should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is,” Robbie said at a recent SAG screening of the film, according to Deadline.

“But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”

“There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed,” the star said during a panel discussion, admitting that she’s actually very happy with the warm reception the film received.

She continued, “[I’m] beyond ecstatic that we’ve got eight Academy Award nominations, it’s so wild…. We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact.”

“And it’s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would,” Margot went on. “And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”

Not a complete snub

It’s worth noting that Margot technically is nominated for an Oscar—just not for acting in her titular role as Barbie.

Because she is one of the producers on the film, Robbie will get an Oscar if Barbie wins best picture.

Gerwig also has a nomination, for best adapted screenplay.

Over the years, the Australian actress has been nominated for both best actress (I, Tonya) and best supporting actress (Bombshell).

Still, while talking about Barbie, she said, “I’ve never been a part of something like this.”

“I’ve done comic book stuff and that gets a big reaction, but this felt very different.”

“It still feels very different,” she continued. “And I can’t think of a time when a movie’s had this effect on culture.”

“And it’s amazing to be in the eye of the storm,” Margot concluded.
