While many of us stay at home, hundreds of thousands of "essential workers" are still going to work, putting their own lives at risk.

This week, Meghan McCain has spoken out calling for all essential workers to "have their pay doubled."

But not everyone agrees with her. Keep scrolling to find out why...

We are relying on essential workers more than ever right now.

While many of us self-isolate, these people are continuing to go to work day in and day out.

These people are putting their lives at risk.

From delivery drivers to grocery store employees,  many of these people are at an increased risk of contracting the virus - coming in contact with the public on a daily basis.

And of course, we can't forget about frontline healthcare workers.

As the situation gets more serious, we are leaning on the vital work of healthcare professionals more and more.

In fact, things have gotten so bad that retired healthcare professionals are being asked to return.

Yep, really. Over the pond in the U.K. tens of thousands of retired medics are being asked to return to the U.K.'s National Health Service in order to "boost frontline services," as per the BBC.

Healthcare services are strained as it is.

And we have to remember that they are people too.

Just last week, doctors and nurses were pleading for masks.

Across the globe, staff are being forced to re-use dirty masks or even make their own.

This is truly awful.

How has this been allowed to happen?

Not to mention the fact that when they finally finish their shift...

They can't even buy any food due to people stockpiling. One nurse even filmed herself breaking down in tears after a forty-eight-hour shift when she pulled up to the grocery store (you can read her heartbreaking story at the end).

But of course, there is still so much good in the world.

For example, some kindhearted people have been donating protective masks to healthcare workers.

People have also been coming up with other ways to show their gratitude.

Small gestures like this go a long way.

But it seems that one star thinks that more should be done for essential workers.

TV personality, columnist, and author, Meghan McCain, has spoken out this week on an episode of The View.

“I think that anyone who is doing any kind of essential work for us right now should not only get hazard pay but should have their pay doubled," she said. “These people are putting their lives on the line, putting their families at risk just for us to be able to get our groceries and needed packages."

And if companies refuse to pay up?

McCain thinks it's down to the government to ensure pay is increased. "I think it is up to the government," she said. “If we have to do another stimulus and aid package for essential workers that’s what we have to do at this time."

Her comments come after workers at Amazon and other companies began protesting over a lack of suitable protection on the job against the virus.

And it seems most people agree with Meghan's stance on the matter.

Twitter was flooded with reactions to the star's comments.

And the majority agreed with her.

Some raised this point.

Many people overlook that anyone working with the public is also considered to be frontline.

Another user also pointed out that some journalists should qualify for higher pay too.

"Don't forget to include FIELD news reporters who are on the streets getting footage for the news stations & being offered no protection by their stations."

But it seems that not everyone agrees with McCain...

Not everyone thinks doubling pay is a good idea.

Some raised this point.

"Workers should be happy they're working and getting a salary."

Others think the priority should first be given to frontline healthcare workers.

The topic seems to have divided many people, but the fact remains that amid this pandemic, essential workers are vital at keeping us afloat. For more on the pandemic, keep scrolling to see about how our favorite celebs are cheering us up. Just wait until you see the video of John Legend...
