The adult industry is bigger than it has ever been.

According to various reports, it has been estimated that the industry today is worth around a staggering $97 million. The rise of the internet allowed the industry to quadruple in size, giving millions around the world free and easy access to adult films.

PornHub is one of the industry's biggest providers...

Apparently, PornHub streamed 75 GB of data a second last year, which is enough to fill 175 million 16 GB iPhones. So it's safe to say that adult films are pretty popular, whether people like to admit it or not.

Stars can earn a huge wage...

Take Jenna Jameson, for instance. Her net worth is currently $30 million now that she is a huge household name in the industry.

It is a common known fact that female stars earn more than their male counterparts...

The Independent spoke to Derek Hay, founder of LA Direct Models, which represents some of the top American adult stars, and he said that, as a standard, a female adult performer would earn a minimum of around $1,000 per scene. A male performer, however, would usually earn between $500-1,000 for the same scene.

But the life of an adult star isn't as lavish as it seems...

Mia Khalifa is a former actor who managed to break out of the adult industry and continue to be famous and in the mainstream. Back in her X-rated days, Mia was one of the most popular female stars out there and she was one of the most searched stars online.

Mia very quickly rose to fame in the adult industry.

The Lebanese-born star began her career in the United States in 2014 and, by December that year, she was ranked as the number 1 performer on the most popular adult site.

Some of her performances ruffled some feathers, however...

Her career choices caused controversy in the Middle East - the place in which Mia was born - due to one of her performances involving her wearing an Islamic hijab whilst performing sexual acts. This video, which showed Mia and her co-star playing along to a terrorist-style beheading scene, caused outrage and even resulted in Mia receiving abuse and death threats over her actions.

She even received threats from the terrorist organization, ISIS...

Mia, who was raised Catholic, had manipulated images of herself shared online by an ISIS executioner threatening that she will be going to Hell - she replied to the threat light-heartedly, saying: "I've been meaning to get a little tan recently."

Mia was twenty-one-years-old at the time of the video and she insisted that it was the producers' ideas to involve the beheading theme...

The terror group also hacked her Instagram account, filling it with Jihadi propaganda before Instagram stepped in and shut down her account. This frightening incident was what lead Mia to leave the industry for good.

She left the industry 3 months later...

Mia transitioned into a career as a social media personality, webcam model, and sports commentator. She also runs her very own Youtube channel, which has over 740,000 subscribers.

One of her old interviews spilled some home truths...

She took to her Twitter account a few months ago to reveal an interview that she did with her friend, Megan Abbott, about leaving the industry, how she adjusted to life after being a huge adult star, and how it wasn't all "sunshine and flowers."

The interview was designed for Mia to "tell her story."

She begins the interview by discussing how she got into the industry and, of course, the controversy surrounding the death threats from ISIS. "The turning point, of course, was when I did the hijab scene," she admitted. "That is when the ISIS death threats came in, all of the news broke out... globally," she added, "not just in America. It was trending on Twitter, it was all over the news."

Mia is still feeling the consequences of the controversial adult film...

"I was banned from a handful of countries… Egypt… Afghanistan… Very Muslim countries were deeply offended by it, and I’m Catholic," Mia explained in the interview.

The topic of money was brought up...

Mia announced that, in total, she only made around $12,000 from her time spent working in the adult industry. However, many fans found this hard to believe and they took to Twitter to express their disbelief, but Mia was at hand to correct these rumors.

Mia reminded her fans that she was only in the industry for a few months...

"To clarify, I was never offered millions, nor do I expect it," she went on to say, "I’m just clarifying common misconceptions about me, and in turn, about the industry ... I was involved in it so briefly, but my actions spread like wildfire, and I continue to be ranked (truly baffles me) 5 years after leaving the industry. This is why people think I still perform."

The interview brought in floods of support.

Despite many still refusing to believe that Mia only made $12,000 from her time in films, others have responded to her claims with support and praise. Ex-star, Cassie Young, backed up Mia's claims, stating that not all stars make good money.

"A stigma attached to porn..."

One user on Twitter acknowledged the stigma that is still attached to the industry today. Sadly, it carries a negative stigma all thanks to the select few who have abused their rights in the industry in the past - not all performers and producers do this, and the majority are simply trying to earn a living.

More recently, however, she posted a Tik Tok video which sparked concerns amongst fans.

In the video, she can be seen standing around her home, with bright colors flashing like strobe lights but her face is completely blank.

The text overlaying the video explains why:

"That hourly dissociative attack from remembering hundreds of millions of people’s only impression of you is solely based on the lowest, most toxic, most uncharacteristic 3 months of your life when you were 21."

Fans left comments with words of support as they realized she may not be in the best state of mind.

One user commented saying she thought Khalifa was "strong" writing: "You seem like such a strong confident woman but it’s okay to be vulnerable sometimes. You have grown so much!"

Even Twitter users noticed a difference in her usual bright self.

This user was pretty vocal about people's attitudes towards her.

Some people just couldn't get over how much she had changed.

It is a drastic difference but it's all due to the negativity that came with her adult role.

Lots of fans tried to empathize with her.

It's heartbreaking what one mistake can do to a person.

And this user spilled the hot tea...

These are just the facts.

Others took a different path.

It was a very dangerous mistake. Regardless, it doesn't mean everyone who watches them shouldn't now better themselves.

It's a difficult one for people to agree on...

Many people have mixed views on it.

Oh yikes.

Now, this is something else altogether.

But there's one thing we need to remember:

The adult industry is very harmful and needs to be fully restricted.

Since Mia became more open with fans about her stint in the adult industry...

Many fans have demanded her videos be removed from any website hosting them until she is fairly compensated.

The hashtag #JusticeForMia has been going around on Twitter.

One fan even started a change.org petition, which currently has over 1.1 million signatures, at the time of writing.

The petition - titled: "Justice For Mia Khalifa" - states that Mia's "infamous hijab video" lead to the star receiving ISIS death threats.

"Mia and her team have provided countless financial offers to the current owners of her domain name and pornographic videos to no avail. Big corporations are not giving Mia Khalifa a fair chance to demand her content in court due to financial advantage," the petition reads. "We are demanding her domain names be returned, her videos be removed and fairly discussed in court without putting Mia Khalifa into deep financial ruin. Mia has stated her regret for her decisions in the porn industry multiple times."

In response to the outpour of support from fans...

Mia shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram: "Look what y’all did... I love you so much. #GenZ, and especially the creator of the hashtag, Bella, haven’t stopped spreading awareness in 4 days and this is the result. "I promise I will make #justiceformia the first step to change, this movement these girls have started will shed light on the predatory practices of that industry, and help save the annual thousands of girls from the same traps." She continued:

"Shop ethical. Support the WOMEN who own & distribute their content, not the ones exploited by having no control of their bodies. "ALSO, please keep the momentum going for causes that need more attention than anything else right now. Most of which being the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, the ongoing BLM fight, and COVID safety (wear a f***ing mask)."

The message was accompanied with a video montage of messages from fans.
