Former adult star Mia Khalifa cooked up a social media firestorm when she recently revealed some of the horrifying effects she had to endure in the adult industry.
Now, she has thanked fans for their outpour of support. Keep scrolling to hear more about her controversial stint in the adult industry and to watch her video response...
The adult industry is bigger than it has ever been.According to various reports, it has been estimated that the industry today is worth around a staggering $97 million. The rise of the internet allowed the industry to quadruple in size, giving millions around the world free and easy access to adult films.
PornHub is one of the industry's biggest providers...Apparently, PornHub streamed 75 GB of data a second last year, which is enough to fill 175 million 16 GB iPhones. So it's safe to say that adult films are pretty popular, whether people like to admit it or not.
Stars can earn a huge wage...Take Jenna Jameson, for instance. Her net worth is currently $30 million now that she is a huge household name in the industry.
It is a common known fact that female stars earn more than their male counterparts...The Independent spoke to Derek Hay, founder of LA Direct Models, which represents some of the top American adult stars, and he said that, as a standard, a female adult performer would earn a minimum of around $1,000 per scene. A male performer, however, would usually earn between $500-1,000 for the same scene.
But the life of an adult star isn't as lavish as it seems...
Mia very quickly rose to fame in the adult industry.
Some of her performances ruffled some feathers, however...
She even received threats from the terrorist organization, ISIS...
Mia was twenty-one-years-old at the time of the video and she insisted that it was the producers' ideas to involve the beheading theme...
She left the industry 3 months later...Mia transitioned into a career as a social media personality, webcam model, and sports commentator. She also runs her very own Youtube channel, which has over 740,000 subscribers.
One of her old interviews spilled some home truths...
People think I’m racking in millions from porn. Completely untrue. I made a TOTAL of around $12,000 in the industry… https://t.co/IcT3v9smiB— Mia K. (@Mia K.)1565627901.0
The interview was designed for Mia to "tell her story."She begins the interview by discussing how she got into the industry and, of course, the controversy surrounding the death threats from ISIS. "The turning point, of course, was when I did the hijab scene," she admitted. "That is when the ISIS death threats came in, all of the news broke out... globally," she added, "not just in America. It was trending on Twitter, it was all over the news."
Mia is still feeling the consequences of the controversial adult film..."I was banned from a handful of countries… Egypt… Afghanistan… Very Muslim countries were deeply offended by it, and I’m Catholic," Mia explained in the interview.
The topic of money was brought up...
Months*, and yes. It’s around 1k a video. https://t.co/YWZ0rJ3V8i— Mia K. (@Mia K.)1565648041.0
Mia reminded her fans that she was only in the industry for a few months..."To clarify, I was never offered millions, nor do I expect it," she went on to say, "I’m just clarifying common misconceptions about me, and in turn, about the industry ... I was involved in it so briefly, but my actions spread like wildfire, and I continue to be ranked (truly baffles me) 5 years after leaving the industry. This is why people think I still perform."
The interview brought in floods of support.

More recently, however, she posted a Tik Tok video which sparked concerns amongst fans.In the video, she can be seen standing around her home, with bright colors flashing like strobe lights but her face is completely blank.
The text overlaying the video explains why:"That hourly dissociative attack from remembering hundreds of millions of people’s only impression of you is solely based on the lowest, most toxic, most uncharacteristic 3 months of your life when you were 21."
Fans left comments with words of support as they realized she may not be in the best state of mind. One user commented saying she thought Khalifa was "strong" writing: "You seem like such a strong confident woman but it’s okay to be vulnerable sometimes. You have grown so much!"
Even Twitter users noticed a difference in her usual bright self. This user was pretty vocal about people's attitudes towards her.
Some people just couldn't get over how much she had changed.
