And she made the most idyllic first lady.

The couple first met when a then twenty-five-year-old Michelle Robinson was assigned as a mentor for a twenty-eight-year-old Barack Obama at their law firm.

“Barack, about a month in, asked me out, and I thought ‘No way. This is completely tacky,'” she told ABC News, when discussing how the pair had met.

Barack’s proposed date was clearly a hit, as the pair were quick to become a couple, and later tied the knot in 1992. Michelle noted that her husband’s vows were a glimpse at what was to come. “Barack didn’t pledge riches, only a life that would be interesting. On that promise he delivered,” she later recalled.

And, along with their 2 young daughters, was suddenly catapulted into the spotlight when he ran for president.

“I could do nothing,” Evy Poumpouras told Insider in a recent interview.

“There’s freedom of speech in the United States, and even if I personally feel that speech is wrong, the law doesn’t give me the power to take that person’s speech away.”

Poumpouras continued:

“When it came to speech, they could call them names,” she recalled. “They could say whatever they wanted so long as there was no imminent threat of harm.”

In Poumpouras’ 2020 memoir Becoming Bulletproof, she detailed one horrific incident, writing this:

“I was on her protective detail when we were driving to a school to deliver a speech; we passed someone on a bridge holding up a shockingly racist sign directed at her. I remember feeling outraged — after all, it was part of our job to protect the first family mentally as well as physically. But if the first lady saw the sign, she gave no indication of it. We arrived at the school and she walked out with her head held high, ready to inspire all of the students eagerly waiting for her.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about incidents like this against the Obamas.

Back in 2017, Obama said this line and it really stayed with us.
“Knowing that after 8 years of working really hard for this country, there are still people who won’t see me for what I am because of my skin color.”

It’s just unacceptable behavior, but we’re glad the Obamas are above such disgusting abuse.
