Miley Cyrus has recently opened up about her decision to go sober, but her path to sobriety has been filled with trials and tribulations often overlooked by the media.

Take a look at her full story...

Miley Cyrus has had an interesting life, to say the least.

Considering she’s only twenty-seven-years-old, it’s pretty remarkable everything the star has accomplished.

But this week, the star has decided to open up about a part of her life away from the glitz, glamor, and success...

And she made a shocking confession about her sobriety.

Now, Miley first burst onto our screens as the lead role on the popular Disney show, Hannah Montana.

The then thirteen-year-old starred alongside her country singer dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, in the hit show, which debuted in 2006. The star played a grade-school student who lives a double life as an international pop star.

The series had a 4-year run...

Until, much to fan's disappointment, filming stopped in late 2010.

Miley also starred in the movie version of the show...

Just a year before the hit Disney show came to an end, the show took to the box office, seeing Cyrus star alongside her Hannah Montana cast in Hannah Montana: The Movie.

After becoming a teen sensation, the singer quickly showed signs that she wanted to move on from her teenage Disney persona.

Following her Disney stardom, the star featured in a Vanity Fair photo-shoot which some accused of being "provocative" - the first sign that the star was becoming restless in her Hannah Montana role. At the time, she issued an apology for the controversial shoot.

But the star later retracted her apology for the controversial Vanity Fair shoot...

In 2018, a decade on from the photo-shoot, the singer took to Twitter to say that she's no longer sorry about the shoot.

Following her Disney fame, Miley has enjoyed a successful music career.

The singer released 2 albums while starring in Hannah Montana - producing several singles, including the popular 2009 hits "Party in the U.S.A.," and "The Climb".

In the same year that we waved goodbye to Hannah Montana, the star began her on-off relationship with Liam Hemsworth.

The 2 first met on the set of Nicholas Sparks's film, The Last Song, in 2009, where they starred opposite each other as love interests.

Of course, we all know how that ended...

They may have been one of Hollywood's most high-profile couples, but just 8 months after tying the knot, the pair called it quits.

And of course...

Miley also dated old flame Cody Simpson - but that didn't work out either.

Soon after her Disney-induced fame, the pop powerhouse began to drastically move away from her PG persona.

We well and truly kissed goodbye to Hannah Montana when the star debuted her bleach blonde pixie cut in 2012, marking a huge change of direction for the singer.

It was definitely clear that Miley's Disney days were behind her when she released this music video...

The star's single, "We Can't Stop," from her fourth album Bangerz, showed us a different side to the then twenty-one-year-old.

As well as for her music videos...

Around this time, the star attracted headlines for her rebellious antics, too.

From smoking marijuana to getting tatted up, she was hot tabloid news...

And many dubbed her as just another Disney star who had gone off the rails.

But the star has recently opened up about cleaning up her act...

And she revealed the personal reasons as to why.

In the latest issue of Rolling Stone, she opened up about what really happened behind closed doors...

Cyrus said that, while the media perceived she had it all together in 2018, that was far from the truth.

Referring to her marriage to Liam Hemsworth, she said, "In early 2018, I was playing house, which felt really good at the time."

"Now I have this healthy perspective that I didn't have before. I learned a lot about what I can and cannot be for someone else and what I can and cannot accept for myself."

While she said "it looked like I was living some fairy tale," she was actually living a nightmare...

"At that time, my experimentation with drugs and booze and the circle of people around me was not fulfilling or sustainable or ever going to get me to my fullest potential and purpose," she continued.

She said her physical appearance would often lead the media to speculate whether she was "off the rails" or not.

"There's an idea that during the 'Younger Now' era, I was pure," she continued, referring to her 2017 album. "The media likes to have my hair or what I look like be the point of reference for my sanity. 'Hair's long and blond, she's sane right now. She cannot be f****d up on drugs. It's when her hair is painted or she's growing out her armpit hair [that] she's on drugs."

Her relationship with Hemsworth was what made people think she had it all together.

"'She's got a man. She's living in a house playing wife.' Dude, I was way more off my path at that time than any of the times before where my sanity was being questioned," she continued. "I don't like ever saying anything in a very solid concrete way, but right now I have been focusing on sobriety as I wanted to wake up 100 percent, 100 percent of the time. If I've ever learned to balance myself and to not take it too far, I would. But so far any time I've messed with that, it hasn't gotten me what I want."

Cyrus explained her twenty-sixth birthday was what motivated her into getting sober, due to her refusing to join the "twenty-seven club," a group of musicians that died at the age of twenty-seven.

She said she was "pretty much fully sober" by the age of twenty-seven, but admits she did fall back into bad habits during the pandemic. "Haven't done drugs in years," she clarified. "Honestly, I never try to, again, be a fortune-teller. I try to not be naive. Things f*****g happen. But from sitting here with you right now, I would say it would have to be a cold day in hell for me to relapse on drugs."

She did admit, however, that she "would possibly take mushrooms" again if given the opportunity...

Although she quickly added: "I take my mental and physical health a lot more seriously than I ever did before."

We're proud of you, Miley!
