Nothing is more awkward than dating someone and realizing you’ve been pronouncing their name wrong. Well that’s what happened to one man and the story is as awkward as it sounds…
We know that dating is extremely difficult nowadays.
You can’t seem to find a decent person anywhere. And meeting someone organically seems almost impossible.
It seems like the best place to look is the dreaded dating apps.
We’ve all scrolled aimlessly through the never-ending stream of (let’s face it) trash people.
However when you do meet someone online, it’s hard to know what they’re really like.
It seems like they only exist in the digital realm, that is until you finally meet them.
And when you do meet them, how do you really know you have everything right?
I mean, until that point they’ve just been a name on a screen.
Well one Reddit user made the internet giggle when he admitted something crazy…
He claimed it happened to his best friend, but we’re not so sure.
“In November, my best friend met this girl online, Elena. He has never had any sort of relationship before hence this is super exciting. They eventually also met up and got on really well.”
“He tells me about her and is super excited and everything and I am really happy for him.”
The friend wanted to do some online sleuthing on the new girl…
“At some point I wanted to Facebook-Stalk her, so I went to his profile and looked for a girl on his friend list called Eleanor, because that’s how he pronounced it, but couldn’t find anyone, so I thought maybe she just doesn’t have Facebook.”
“Anyways, at some point I ask him for pictures of her, so he shows me her profile, the name is spelt Elena.”
“I said oooh that’s why I didn’t find the profile, I was looking for an Eleanor, I would have pronounced this name like Alaina. (I am not a native English speaker, he and that girl are.) but he told me that it’s pronounced Eleanor.”
You can see where this is going…
The Reddit user goes on to say that it was only when he met one of her best friends that he realised he had been pronouncing her name wrong for their whole relationship which was six months.
She didn’t even know…
Somehow, she was unaware of his mistake as he had never said her name in front of her (how he did this, we’re not sure).
He had got it wrong for half a year…
“You were right all along… turns out neither one of us ever used her name when we met up. And I had the laugh flash of my life! Now she’s also meeting some of his friends and he’s frantically running around telling everyone the new pronunciation.”
We don’t know what’s worse, that he got the name wrong or that he’s not said her name in front of her for six months…
However that’s not the worst we found… one family fell out when discussing the name of their newborn baby.
And it is honestly as crazy as it sounds…
One woman started a family feud after naming her newborn the exact same name her sister had picked out for her child.
But everyone supports her choice…
Which sounds unforgivable, but many think it was her sister that was in the wrong…
Both their children now have the same first, middle, and last names.
And it gets worse…
Both of the names were very meaningful to her.
And the middle name represented an important time in her life.
She agreed she liked the name, but nothing was said about it after that.
And revealed she had used the exact same names for her daughter.
But “wasn’t going to let it stop me from using the name”.
Since both she and her sister have the same last names, the two girls have the same first, middle, and last names.
“I told her I wasn’t going to change the name I had wanted for a long time, that had a deep meaning for me, just because she decided to use it after I told her the name.”
“She said as the first one to have a baby she got dibs. I told her to get over it and it was a name anyone could use.”
And they supported her for sticking to the name she originally wanted.
One commented on Reddit: “She’s the a**hole on this. In fact she’s a double the a**hole, once for using the name you told her, twice for giving you s*** and saying she named first so she had dibs.”
A second said: “You chose it first and she knew that. If she didn’t want it to be weird and she knew that’s the name you would go with, she shouldn’t have used it.”
Another added: “Who the hell calls ‘dibs’ on a name they stole from someone else??”
