Mom Lets 4-Year-Old Give Her a Haircut Before She Starts Chemo

Emilie Orton has had one hell of a journey...

The thirty-two-year-old's life turned upside down when she was diagnosed with stage 2 ovarian cancer.

And understandably, her family was utterly devastated...

Emile has 3 young children and a husband who have supported her throughout her journey, but the fight has been a tough one.

But, regardless, they powered on...

And right before she underwent chemotherapy, she decided to give her daughter the honor of giving her a special haircut, and as heartbreaking as the reason is, the pictures she shared provided us all with some warmth and happiness.

Now, you will all know that, out of all the illnesses in the world, cancer is by far one of the most devastating.

A result of the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body, cancer develops when the body's normal control mechanism stops working.

Instead of old cells dying like they're supposed to...

They instead mutate, forming new, abnormal cells.

And the treatment is grueling.

The goal of treatment is to kill as many cancerous cells as possible, all the while avoiding any damage to the normal and healthy cells nearby.

However, this isn't always possible.

The most common treatment, chemotherapy, acts as a "poison" and kills off the abnormal cells. However, it can often kill normal cells, too, which makes people incredibly ill, resulting in hair loss, weight loss, and general sickness.

It isn't a cure... And we are yet to discover one.

We are a long way off from finding an official cure for cancer...

And the numbers of those being diagnosed with the illness keep on rising every year. Just last year, an estimated 1.8 million cases of cancer were diagnosed in the United States alone.

And, out of those diagnosed with the devastating illness...

An estimated 606,880 sadly passed away.

These numbers are simply devastating.

Medical researchers have been working hard for decades to find a cure for the illness and, though they haven't found one officially, they have come up with many alternative methods to combat the disease.

However, for many patients, chemotherapy is the main one.

Emilie Orton, who is from Arizona, was shocked when she found out she had stage 2 ovarian cancer and was forced to undergo multiple scans and ultrasounds before medical professionals told her she would have to start chemo as soon as possible.

And for a lot of people, starting such an intense procedure comes with sacrifices.

In an essay for Romper, she described the experience.

"Knowing that a beautiful baldness was coming my way terrified me and made me cry on multiple occasions..."

"...But I tried to think of the best way to make it bearable for this family of mine. After all it was not just me going through this cancer journey, but all of us together. And also my hair."

And this is why she gave her 4-year-old daughter of giving her a special haircut.

"I found the perfect hairstylist to ease me into my new cancer look: my 4-year-old daughter," she wrote. "She has names for each of the different styles she comes up with: 'the waterfall,' 'the half-braider,' 'the pigs,' 'French toast braids,' you name it. So when cancer came a-knocking, so did her calling in life."

Emilie decided to share the event on her Instagram.

Along with some heartwarming photographs, the mother decided to share a 3-minute video showcasing the new hairstyle she was going to receive, describing it as "a fantastic four-year-old job."
