Shocking footage has gone viral today that shows a mountain lion stalking a man during his weekend run...

For 6 whole minutes.

The terrifying footage, which was captured by avid trail-runner, Kyle Burgess, shows how the territorial big cat stalked him for over 6 minutes as he did his best to warn her off.

Somehow, Kyle made it out alive...

And many have commended him for his quick thinking and appropriate response to the gut-wrenching situation.

Now, as you all know, it's common knowledge to stay well away from big cats...

Because they most certainly are not as lovable as our trusty domestic cats are.

There are many native big cats here in the United States...

But perhaps one of the most common is the mountain lion, which can also be identified as a puma or a cougar.

As their name suggests, mountain lions typically live in dense, mountainous areas across the Americas...

But they are sometimes known to venture out into more populated areas.

And let me tell you, you do not want to encounter a mountain lion.

These big cats are known for being extremely territorial and aggressive, and even though an attack is rare, several have been recorded in the last decade across the United States and Canada.

This means that if a mountain lion is spotted in a public area...

Disaster could strike.

And the footage we're about to show you...

Proves just that.

The incident happened in Slate Canyon near Provo, Utah, over the weekend.

Kyle Burgess was out running along the trail (without the dog, don't worry!) when he came across a litter of mountain lion cubs.

And, despite not approaching the animals...

The mother cougar suddenly appeared, hissing and spitting at Kyle in defense.

Kyle attempted to walk away without agitating the cougar even further...

But, clearly threatened, she went on to charge and stalk him for 6 long minutes.

Somehow, the whole incident was caught on camera and posted online...

Now, at the start of the video, you can see the cougar running towards Kyle...

Before slowing to a menacing stalking pace. "This is scary. My heart is racing. Dude, okay. This is not fun," Kyle can be heard gasping. "Go away! Go away! Go back to your babies!"

However, the big cat has other ideas.

She repeatedly charges at Kyle, brandishing her teeth and claws and snarling aggressively, causing him to yell out: "No! Get the f**k away! Holy s**t!"

Kyle continues to slowly walk backwards...

And, for 6 whole minutes, he made himself "look big," never turned his back, made loud noises, and eventually threw a rock at the cougar, causing her to run away.

However, he now admits that he wasn't sure if he would survive the encounter.

Speaking to KSL News Radio, he explained: "This is the first time I have ever encountered a mountain lion... They’re powerful animals. They take down moose and take down other huge animals, so I’m pretty sure if she wanted to kill me, she could have."

On Kyle's wise response to the predator, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources manager, Scott Root, said:

“He backed away. She let him know really well you need to get out of here. He did that, but he didn’t turn around and run, which is the right thing. He made lots of noise, and he didn’t crouch or do anything to look smaller, you want to look really big."
