Neuralink has released a video of their now-famous monkey playing a video game with only its mind.
Scroll on to see the somewhat eerie footage for yourself…
Now, in the last couple of years, Neuralink has been making headlines for its controversial, yet groundbreaking work with brain technology.
The company, which says its eventual goal is to use its technology to allow people with paralysis to interact with machines using their brain activity, has already made waves across the globe in its short life.
Billionaire entrepreneur, Elon Musk, first announced Neuralink in 2019…
And, almost immediately, the world was transfixed by some of the company’s eventual goals.
Last summer, Neuralink unveiled a working prototype of a brain-implant device that founders believe can cure everything from blindness to quadriplegia.
In a demo that Musk called “The Three Little Pigs,” he proved his team successfully embedded the Neuralink implant into pig brains, and the device seemed to be working.
“The neurons are like wiring,” Musk said in a live stream briefing last year. “And you need an electronic thing to solve an electronic problem.”
But, more recently…
The eccentric entrepreneur revealed that his team had successfully implanted a Neuralink chip in a monkey’s brain.
He claimed the animal, a macaque monkey named Pager, could play video games “with his mind” in a wide-ranging online question and answer session.
Pretty far-fetched, I know.
He said this:
“We’ve already got a monkey with a wireless implant in their skull and the tiny wires who can play video games using his mind.”
Theoretically, this same technology could be used to give people control of synthetic limbs via a Neuralink brain implant.
In a tweet last week, Musk said the first Neuralink product would let people with paralysis control a smartphone.
Of course, many animal rights activists haven’t been too impressed by the idea of a monkey being implanted with a Neuralink chip…
But Musk was quick to stress that Pager had not been put in harms way.
In fact, he even stated that it was “happy.”
“He’s totally happy. He does not look like an unhappy monkey… He’s not uncomfortable and he doesn’t look weird. We’re trying to work out if we can get the monkeys to play mind pong with each other, you know that would be pretty cool.”
He also claimed that when a US Department of Agriculture official came to inspect their monkey facilities, she was mightily impressed.
“When the USDA person came through and inspected our facilities, our monkey facilities, she said it was like the nicest monkey facilities she’s ever seen in her career,” he explained. “We went the extra mile for the monkeys.”.
Well, Pager has happily been playing video games with his mind for the last month or so…
And now, Neuralink have released a video of him in action.
People are amazed by the footage…
If not a little spooked.
In the video, Pager was given a joystick that was hooked up to a video game in which he moves a cursor to a colored square.
When he successfully moved the cursor, he was given a banana smoothie through a tube.
But, while Pager used the joystick, the Neuralink chip was recording his brain activity and sending it back to a computer for analysis. The joystick was then unplugged from the machine, but Pager continued to control the game, with brain signals being relayed by the Neuralink chips.
You can watch the video below.
Pretty impressive stuff, right?
