“A string of Tweets by @yrfatfriend gives personal details of how flying can be particularly stressful for very fat people.”

But much of it will come as a harrowing revelation.

It’s something we don’t realize we do to people.

By posting this…

…something they do a lot of, no doubt…

…and remind people…

…doesn’t mean that people’s feelings disappear.

Chances are it would be even if everyone was nice.

advertisement

…the journey can become scary.

Flying on a plane is a right.

…can be made time and again.

Which is compassion.

And it doesn’t have to be.

advertisement

…they know they’re fat.

But they don’t need to be dehumanized because of that realization.

There’s no point to the shame that’s put on them.

We’re not going to change their lives by treating them like crap.

Because their weight is an inconvenience to us.

advertisement

or emotionally…

So we make them uncomfortable.

But it solves nothing.

And it’s clear from this account that it certainly doesn’t make the author feel any better. The account goes on, and you can read the whole moving thing here, but the takeaway is clear enough. Be kind to people. Often, you underestimate what they’re going through.
