Paul Pelosi has made his first public appearance since a brutal attack shook his family to the core.
It comes just over a month after he was attacked in his own home.
The eighty-two-year-old suffered serious injuries.
His wife Nancy Pelosi’s emotional response has touched the internet’s heart…
Read on for the full story.
Nancy Pelosi is the only woman to ever hold the position of House Speaker.
After getting voted in 2006, she represented the House until 2011 and then again in 2018 after the Democrats took back the majority.
She’s had a long political history.
Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the Democratic Mayor Thomas D’Alesandro Jr who gave her the responsibility of keeping track of people that owed him political favors.
She went from strength to strength.
At the age of forty-seven, she was encouraged to run for congresswoman by another female politician and managed to secure the seat. She was sworn in with her father beside her side in what has been described as a “touching” moment.
Nancy was a trailblazer.
While others shied away from topics that were regarded as “controversial” at the time, Nancy took control of them, becoming an advocate for LGBTQ rights and the AIDS crisis.
She was backed by other prominent politicians at the time, including Rep. Chuck Schumer.
After Dick Gephardt stepped down as minority leader, Nancy took on the role, becoming the first woman to ever lead a party in Congress.
But things aren’t perfect.
While she was a trailblazer back in the day, these days it seems as though she’s losing her popularity.
She was recently re-elected.
But just by a slight margin. She received a total of 216 votes with House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy receiving 209.
People were not happy.
One of those members is Democratic Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin who said: “I’m not supporting the Speaker. I’ll be voting present because no one stepped up to run against her. It’s a commitment that I made in March of 2018 before I was elected.”
“She is very aware of the fact that with a slim majority — with some members who voted against her two years ago – there is gonna have to be an effort to persuade them that that was then and this is now.”
“We cannot afford to have uncertainty about the speakership,” Connolly added.
Nancy was then hit with more bad news.
As her husband, Paul was brutally attacked by an intruder in their home last month.
This marks a major moment in the USA’s growing political unrest and violence.
The intruder, a forty-two-year-old man called David DePape, was reportedly screaming, “Where is Nancy?”
He was a proponent of far-right conspiracy theories and had made many worrying online posts.
“A violent man broke into our family home, demanded to confront me and brutally attacked my husband Paul,” Nancy shared.
“Our children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop.
“We are grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services, and for the life-saving medical care he is receiving.
“Please know that the outpouring of prayers and warm wishes from so many in the Congress is a comfort to our family and is helping Paul make progress with his recovery,” she said.
Paul was hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery.
Brooke Jenkins, the San Francisco District Attorney, charged DePape with attempted murder.
He also faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, residential burglary, false imprisonment, and threatening the life or serious bodily harm to a public official.
Jenkins tweeted: “DePape will be held accountable for his violent and depraved attack, and we will prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.
“When citizens of our city suffer as victims of crime, we will hold perpetrators accountable for their actions and work to deliver justice for all.”
Further details of the attack have emerged thanks to the FBI’s criminal complaint.
“In the course of the interview, DePape articulated he viewed Nancy as the ‘leader of the pack’ of lies told by the Democratic Party,” it stated.
“DePape also later explained that by breaking Nancy’s kneecaps, she would then have to be wheeled into Congress, which would show other Members of Congress there were consequences to actions.”
And now, Paul has been seen in public for the first time since the attack.
He and Nancy attended the 45th Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday to celebrate the accomplishments of honorees.
He wore a black hat and a single black glove following his brain surgery.
Also in attendance were President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill.
We’re wishing him a speedy recovery!
