Blonde is an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Joyce Carol Oates of the same name.

It was officially released on Netflix on September 23 and according to UNILAD, the original movie was tagged with an “adults only” rating.

Directed by Andrew Dominik, the biopic stars Ana de Armas as Monroe…

The movie promised to disclose secrets of the tragic star’s public and private life, as revealed in the trailer.

As well as offering viewers a glimpse into Monroe’s “rise to fame” as quoted from the synopsis of the movie.

The official synopsis for the movie states: “From her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane, through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements, ‘Blonde’ blurs the lines of fact and fiction to explore the widening split between her public and private selves.”

But Blonde was set to have an NC-17 rating…

When asked about why the MPAA classed it as an NC-17 rating, Dominik quickly said: “There’s something in it to offend everyone.”

Adding he “hopes the film will offer a more nuanced and less clear-cut look” at Marilyn’s life, work and personal trauma.

The NC-17 rating was issued because the movie contains “explicit s*xual content.”

Although the movie is likely to be rated for its “pervasive s*xuality and graphic s*xual dialogue,” it surely seems Dominik has been open to the tone of the overall movie.

He told Screen Daily in February: “If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the f***ing audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office.”

Since the Netflix movie was released many raced to the streaming service to see whether it was worth the hype…

And it seems it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea…

Twitter users slammed Dominik’s depiction of s*xual assault and trauma and called it “awful” and “exploitative” in their reviews…

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is currently rated forty-three percent.

Many also warned others away from watching the movie.

Some viewers even admitted that they regretted watching it…

“Tried to watch @netflix Blonde,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Couldn’t stomach more than about 20 minutes of the nearly three hours length. That 20 minutes was nothing but cruel and heartbreaking. Absolutely unwatchable,” they added.

“#Blonde on Netflix is tragically awful. RIP Norma Jean,” another person wrote.

A third Twitter user urged people to “prepare themselves before watching.”

“I’m now 20 minutes into #Blonde and even though Netflix has offered a disclaimer about s*xual content it should be noted that there are scenes of child abuse, violence against women and r*pe. Please prepare yourselves if you watch this. I’m flinching throughout,” they wrote.

“I watched the first 20 minutes of #blonde and then immediately had to check twitter to see if I was missing something or if other people were as disgusted as I am. I feel vindicated,” said another.

“I’m watching #Blonde and I have to say I hope someone is checking in on Ana de Armas and making sure she is okay. Marilyn was exploited and this movie seems to be just more of the same,” one person wrote.

However, despite the backlash, Ana de Armas said she didn’t feel exploited filming nude scenes for the film.

She told Entertainment Weekly: “It’s harder for people to watch [those scenes] than for me to make them, because I understood what I was doing and I felt very protected and safe.”

“I didn’t feel exploited because I was in control. I made that decision. I knew what the movie I was doing. I trusted my director. I felt like I was in a safe environment,” she said.

“We had hundreds of conversations about these scenes. Everyone felt a deep respect for the movie we were making. And in that sense, I had no fear. I didn’t feel uncomfortable at all, even though they were really hard scenes,” the actress admitted.
