Jason Momoa has a lot of explaining to do after a video of him telling a “sickening” joke recently resurfaced.

Well, we thought it didn’t. But now, we’re having second thoughts. Born in 1979, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the six-foot-four actor has only recently become a household name, but his reputation may already be making a nosedive.

The sci-fi military hybrid was actually fairly successful and Momoa starred as Ronon Dex, to much critical acclaim.

In 2011, Momoa was cast in the first series of a relatively small fantasy show called Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones became far more successful than anyone could have ever imagined, and Momoa’s character, Khal Drogo, quickly became a fan favorite.

As the leading warrior in the savage Dothraki tribe, Momoa was, unsurprisingly, very violent. In one particularly memorable scene, Drogo brutally murdered Viserys Targaryen by pouring molten gold onto his head… ouch.

In the early episodes of the show’s first season, Drogo was married to Daenerys Targaryen in an arranged ceremony. But the 2 seemingly opposite characters developed real feelings for each other and theirs became one of the cutest and most genuine love stories in the show.

And since the show, his career has really taken off. He first appeared as DC superhero, Aquaman, in 2016’s Batman v Superman – and Aquaman was so beloved that he went on to star in his own solo movie in 2018.

The character was so well liked that in 2018, the DC Universe decided that it was time for a solo film. Aquaman was a massive success.

Many were surprised that the film did this well, considering the fact that, in the comics, Aquaman is often considered to be a bit of a joke. People were also thrilled to see a superhero played by a person of color.

He had a starring role in the 2018 Canadian action movie, Braven, to commercial and critical success.

One of the most famous is the CBC series, Frontier, which first aired in 2016. It tells the story of the North American fur trade in the eighteenth century and has recently come to Netflix.

In 2005, Momoa met actress, Lisa Bonet, and the pair began a relationship. Although there were reports that the pair had married in 2007, they actually didn’t end up tying the knot until 2017.

They share a daughter, Lola Iolani Momoa, born in 2007, and a son, Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa, born in 2008. Momoa is also a stepfather to singer and actress, Zoe Kravitz.

However, that could all be about to change.

An old video from 2011 has recently resurfaced that shows Momoa telling a disgusting “joke” to the crowd at a Game of Thrones panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

And people have been taking to Twitter to slam the actor for his “sickening” joke all those years ago.

And others are simply dismayed.

Now, I know what you’re thinking… Just how bad is the joke?

“As far as sci-fi and fantasy go as a genre, there are so many things you can do,” he says, “Like rip someone’s tongue out of their throats and get away with it.”

Momoa then says, gesturing towards his co-star, Emilia Clarke, “And rape beautiful women and have them fall in love with me, you know what I mean?” The crowd laughs awkwardly, and several of the GOT cast can be seen putting their heads in their hands out of embarrassment.

And Clarke herself has opened up about how uncomfortable these scenes made her… So many were taken back to hear Momoa’s horrifying “joke.”

The actor blatantly made light out of rape, and joked that, by raping a woman, a man can make her fall in love with him. It’s just wrong.

The fact that a room full of people willingly laughed at his joke says an awful lot, doesn’t it?

The actor said that he understood the “insensitivity” of his remarks but knows his “sincerest apology now won’t take away those hurtful words”. “Rape and sexual harassment can reach anyone and I have seen first hand its painful torment among members of my own family and friends,” he said in an Instagram post.

Many have sprung to his defense by pointing out that, while he has apologized and learned from his mistake, he has never actually committed any sexual offenses.

Should we move on from his joke? Or should the actor be canceled once and for all?
