The 24-foot bronze statue was unveiled in Barranquilla, Colombia, the actress’s birthplace.
The statue, created by local artist Yino Márquez, took seven months and 35 workers—including students—to complete.
And this isn’t the first statue disaster Colombia’s faced.
Márquez also made the controversial statue of Shakira, so, clearly, he has a type.
The Shakira statue—also made by Márquez—sparked similar outcries when it was revealed late last year.
Sofía herself did not attend the unveiling—she was reportedly in Sardinia on vacation with friends and family.
The city of Barranquilla, though, went all out—hosting a formal reveal ceremony on the scenic Gran Malecón.
Mayor Alejandro Char delivered a passionate tribute: “Barranquilla surrenders at your feet.”
He praised her “joy, charisma, authenticity, and unique spirit” while standing in front of the towering bronze figure.
But even with the mayor’s fanfare, most of the internet wasn’t buying it.
It’s not every day a celebrity is immortalized in five tons of bronze—and even rarer when the likeness sparks this much drama.
Reactions to shocking statue unveiled.
Fans immediately took to Reddit, Instagram, and Twitter with one burning question: “Who approved this?!?”
One Redditor from Barranquilla didn’t hold back: “They need to stop making these statues—they’re horrendous.”
“Looks like someone with a big foot fetish made that statue,” joked another user.
A different commenter took a darker tone: “If it gets struck by lightning and comes to life, may God have mercy on us all.”
Naturally, the comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo’s now-infamous statue at Madeira Airport came fast and furious.
“Can we get some people who know how to do faces when making statues?” one person begged.
Some questioned why statues are being made of living people at all.
“It just feels wrong,” said one Reddit user. “Statues should come after you’re gone.”
They added, “It’d be weird if Meryl Streep had one too—no matter how iconic she is.”
Some locals even fear these statues are becoming a weird trend—one that feels more performative than proud.
Like it or not, Sofia’s 24-foot statue is permanent.
But amid all the backlash, some fans are defending the statue, calling it “an important symbol of homegrown success.”
