You read that right, Pope Francis just met the iconic superhero Spiderman outside the Vatican! However, behind what seems to be one of the craziest series crossovers in 2021, is a truly heartwarming twist…
In what has to be one of the strangest crossovers in history, Pope Francis just met Spider-Man himself.
A man dressed in a full-blown Spider-Man costume attended Pope Francis’s general audience at the Vatican in Rome, Italy on Wednesday, June 23th. No, we can’t confirm whether he came swinging in from the Vatican roof, but we’d like to think he did.
Seated beside a black-clad priest in the somber VIP section in the Vatican’s San Damaso Courtyard, Spiderman looked a little out of place.
But the Pope seemed unfazed by his presence.
Photo’s from the encounter show eighty-four-year-old Pope Francis greeting the iconic comic book character, with Spidey gifting him with his very own Spider-Man mask.
Maybe we’ll see him don it on his next holy escapade?
However, it was discovered that the man inside of the Spider-Man suit was a superhero in his own right.
Mattia Villardita is a twenty-seven-year-old from Northern Italy who achieved his VIP seat on account of his efforts working with sick children in hospitals, visiting them while clad in superhero costumes.
La Stampa reports that just last year, Italian President Sergio Mattarella awarded Mattia for his caring work, appointing him as Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
Heres a video of Mattia in action:
Mattia, who has reportedly had health problems since birth, was awarded for his “altruism and imaginative initiatives,” which have helped to “alleviate the suffering of the youngest hospital patients.”
With the life he has lived, we can see why he wasn’t phased by Spider-Man making an appearance.
Pope Francis is one of the most interesting pontiffs of recent times. The first non-European pope since Gregory III, who was born in modern-day Syria and elected in 731, he’s seen and done more in his eighty-four years than most people realize.
These amazing facts include once being a nightclub bouncer in his student days in Buenos Aires, releasing a progressive rock album in 2015, and was even on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in 2014.
So we can see why he took good old Spidey in his stride!
