Headlines were made all over the world when the British Royal Family’s Prince Harry announced his romance with the Suits actress, Meghan Markle.
The couple met back in 2016 when they were set up by a mutual friend who thought the two would hit it off.
Because the pair hit it off, and they immediately arranged to see each other again, eventually going on to have 2 more dates in London.
The pair officially went public with their relationship.
Though she was already pretty well known for her role as Rachel Zane in Suits, the California-born actress was thrown into levels of fame that she had never experienced before.
The world quickly became Meghan and Harry obsessed.
And people were delighted to hear the news of their engagement later that year.
The couple officially tied the knot in May 2018.
The ceremony was simply stunning.
The royals aren’t ones to hold back, are they?
Harry and Meghan wed in a lavish ceremony at Windsor Castle, which became one of the most-watched televised events of all time.
She looked simply beautiful.
They were expecting!
On October 15th, 2018, the couple announced their pregnancy.
Archie Mountbatten-Windsor was welcomed into the world.
They make for the cutest little family.
But things haven’t been as rosy and smooth-sailing as they have been appearing.
Joining the British royal family was never going to be an easy transition, given that a person has to give up their entire life in order to be a part of the monarchy.
But Meghan’s experience has been especially difficult.
And many attacked the Duchess, slamming her as “fake,” with some going as far as accusing her of breaking up the royal family entirely.
To the point where Kensington Palace was forced to issue a statement, pleading for the press and the public alike to take a step back when it comes to their scathing reporting and bombardment of Meghan.
Because they have announced that they will be officially stepping down as senior members of the royal family.
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” the post read.
And have announced that they will be splitting their time between the U.K and North America.
“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity,” they wrote.
This is huge news.
And has bound to have ruffled a couple of feathers in Buckingham Palace.
The Queen released a statement, which read:
“My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”
Matters have reportedly been far from smooth sailing.
And of course, the news has sparked a whole new wave of criticism to head Meghan’s way.
Amid accusations that the couple didn’t tell other senior royals of their plans to step back, the source told PEOPLE that the Sussexes felt they had “no choice” but to handle things the way they have.
However, their feelings are much stronger than we thought. Keep scrolling to find out why…
“This is not how they wanted to handle this, but Meghan and Harry’s hand was forced,” the family friend explained.
“There is so much bad blood in that family — it’s toxic.”
Is how hard this whole experience must have been for Meghan – a new mother.
While attending a charity event, Harry delivered a heartfelt speech about their split from the royal family.
“Before I begin, I must say that I can only imagine what you may have heard or perhaps read over the last few weeks,” Harry said.
“So, I want you to hear the truth from me, as much as I can share – not as a Prince, or a Duke, but as Harry, the same person that many of you have watched grow up over the last 35 years – but with a clearer perspective.”
“The UK is my home and a place that I love. That will never change. I have grown up feeling support from so many of you, and I watched as you welcomed Meghan with open arms as you saw me find the love and happiness that I had hoped for all my life. Finally, the second son of Diana got hitched, hurray!”
“I also know you’ve come to know me well enough over all these years to trust that the woman I chose as my wife upholds the same values as I do. And she does, and she’s the same woman I fell in love with. We both do everything we can to fly the flag and carry out our roles for this country with pride. Once Meghan and I were married, we were excited, we were hopeful, and we were here to serve.”
Harry went on to stress that this decision wasn’t made lightly, but there was no other option.
“The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back, is not one I made lightly. It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges,” Harry said. “And I know I haven’t always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.”
“Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the commonwealth, and my military associations, but without public funding,” he said. “Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible. I’ve accepted this, knowing that it doesn’t change who I am or how committed I am. But I hope that helps you understand what it had to come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known, to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life.”
It was confirmed that Meghan and Harry would no longer be using their HRH titles, and are also intending on reimbursing U.K. taxpayers for renovations made to Frogmore Cottage last year.
“I was born into this life, and it is a great honor to serve my country and the Queen. When I lost my mum 23 years ago, you took me under your wing,” he continued.
“You’ve looked out for me for so long, but the media is a powerful force, and my hope is one day our collective support for each other can be more powerful because this is so much bigger than just us.”
“It has been our privilege to serve you, and we will continue to lead a life of service.”
“I will always have the utmost respect for my grandmother, my commander in chief, and I am incredibly grateful to her and the rest of my family, for the support they have shown Meghan and I over the last few months. I will continue to be the same man who holds his country dear and dedicates his life to supporting the causes, charities and military communities that are so important to me.”
“Together, you have given me an education about living. And this role has taught me more about what is right and just than I could have ever imagined. We are taking a leap of faith – thank you for giving me the courage to take this next step.”
How exactly are the couple planning on being financially independent?
Of course, we already know they’ll be getting money from Prince Charles, but there were also rumors swirling that the pair were in talks with a Hollywood elite team.
According to the Daily Mail, the couple have been told to remove the word “royal” from their branding on both their social media and website.
The pair have been trying to gain the international rights to their “Sussex Royal” brand as they prepare to move onto this new stage in their lives.
The move comes after the Queen allegedly felt it was “inappropriate” for Meghan and Harry to use the word “royal” in their branding given the fact they have chosen to go their own way.
So, it’s unclear if plans will go ahead to prevent them from using “royal” on these platforms.
It seems they’re going out with a bang, by wearing royal red before finally stepping down. I mean, they look great, don’t they?
They were attending the annual Mountbatten Music Festival at Royal Albert Hall — a military-sponsored event meant to honor the British who fought in WWII.
A top royal expert recently revealed that the couple actually has no choice but to take things into their own hands and that their initial feelings about leaving the royal family are much stronger than we thought.
“Things might have been different if a family member or two had stood up for them during the darkest times.”
He referred to them as “a couple very much hurting”, who were forced to say goodbye to their team. He also mentioned Prince Harry’s heartbreak at giving up his military honors, describing it as “a wound that will take time to heal.”
“To say they were crushed is an understatement. It’s a decision that the couple still feel wasn’t necessary, but also wasn’t a surprise, given the lack of support they received as they were relentlessly attacked by sections of the British press with almost daily mistruths and hateful commentary.”
“While recent tabloid coverage has made it seem like the Sussexes’ half-in-half-out bid was about wanting it all, the reality was a couple who were left with no other choice but to create their own change after being left to fend for themselves against impossible circumstances — even during her pregnancy.”
“For a couple who only ever wanted to focus on their work and bring good to the world, it seems like an unnecessarily cruel ending to their royal lives. Forced to give up roles they’re incredibly proud of after sacrificing so much to get there.”
“At this point, the 1844 Room is almost empty and tears that the Duchess had been bravely holding back are free to flow among familiar faces. As she embraces some of the loyal staff she will most likely not see again, I can’t help but feel sad for the dedicated team members whose tireless efforts — to promote the couple’s work, launch landmark projects, and deal with the near-daily crises brought on by tabloid lies — have come to an abrupt end.”
“But behind the smiles of the photos has been a vulnerable couple who are still very much hurting. While the weeks and months ahead will no doubt present new challenges for the Sussexes, the couple genuinely feel a sense of excitement about what’s to come, which includes the freedom to work at a pace that suits them, no longer weighed down by protocol or threatened by toxic agendas.”
“And while much has been (incorrectly) speculated about specific commercial endeavors they might be taking on, both Harry and Meghan are eager to get stuck into their work, which will still revolve around their humanitarian efforts and helping amplify the voices of young people around the world on a wide gamut of issues.”
“The terrain may be a little different but their priorities are exactly the same as before,” a well-placed source tells me. “Keeping the family, most importantly Archie, safe is what will make all of this worth it.”
We wish them all the happiness in the world.
