A new documentary exploring one of Princess Diana’s most controversial interviews aired earlier this month and, as a result, an inquiry into the incident has been launched.
But now, amid the rumors and speculation, her youngest son, Prince Harry, has finally addressed the difficult situation.
Prince Harry, who has long been one of the favorite members of the monarchy, has made his opinions about his mother’s treatment in news and media quite clear.
So, of course, the investigation into the ethics behind one of her most controversial moments with the industry is bound to hit close to home.
After meeting only a handful of times, Prince Charles proposed to a young Diana Spencer, who was a whole twelve years his junior, in 1981.
But, during the broadcast, many remember Charles being oddly reluctant to say he was in love with Diana.
During their first televised interview following their engagement, the couple are asked if they are in love, to which Diana responds with a polite “of course”, but Charles ponders, “whatever love means.”
What were you thinking, Charles?
The lavish ceremony was held at St. Paul’s Cathedral and was watched by over 750 million people around the world.
The couple announced their pregnancy just 4 months after tying the knot, and, on June 21st of 1982, they welcomed Prince William into the world.
Prince Harry was born on 15th September 1984.
She had strong ideas about how she wanted her children to be raised, often giving them more freedom than traditional royal heirs.
Unlike the other members of the royal family, Diana was determined to use her platform to better the world and dedicated her life to many noble causes, including the land mine crisis.
Unlike the typical royal wife, Diana was dead set on doing work for herself and for the betterment of the world, earning her the nickname “The People’s Princess.”
On top of Diana’s refusal to sacrifice her identity for the sake of her title, Charles was also in a long-standing affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles, even wearing cufflinks she bought him on his honeymoon with Diana.
Rumors about Queen Elizabeth’s distaste for Diana had been rife for years, with sources claiming that she was even “jealous” of the attention Diana drew from the rest of the family.
And she apparently made no effort to make Diana feel welcome in the family.
Andrew Morton, who collaborated with the Princess on the 1992 Diana: Her True Story wrote that “behind the public smiles and the glamorous image was a lonely and unhappy young woman” and that she was seen “as an outsider by the Queen.”
Their divorce was finalized in 1996, though Diana continued with her public appearances and charity work right up until her tragic death in 1997.
More unsavory details surrounding her experience in the monarchy continue to emerge.
According to ITV, The Diana Interview: Revenge of a Princess tells the inside story of Princess Diana’s 1995 interview with Martin Bashir that not only shocked the U.K but threatened the future of the monarchy and of the BBC.
Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, said that he was shown “false bank statements” by Bashir and that these statements were used to help the reporter gain access to the princess.
And Prince William, second in line to the throne, said:
“The independent investigation is a step in the right direction. It should help establish the truth behind the actions that led to the Panorama interview and subsequent decisions taken by those in the BBC at the time.”
In the days following his brother’s statement, Harry, who now lives in L.A with wife Meghan Markle, didn’t comment or acknowledge the investigation.
Who stepped down from his official royal duties mere months ago.
As well as working on charities and organizations “close to their hearts.”
And now, a source close to the Prince has revealed what he really thinks of the situation.
Harry is getting regular updates and is aware of everything that is happening,” a source close to Harry said, reports The Telegraph.
“You do not need a public statement to imagine how he is feeling privately, people know how much his mother means to him. He has bravely spoken out in the past about loss and grief, and the immense impact it has had on him.”
The investigation continues.
