Let’s go back to where it all started.

Way back in 2001, a little series of books called The Princess Diaries was adapted for the screen.

The movie starred a relatively new, and young actress at the time: Anne Hathaway, who played Mia Thermopolis…

Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo to be exact.

It turns out the whole ‘acting’ thing worked out pretty well for her.

Hathaway had a pretty cool co-star, too.

Along with Hathaway, there was a serious powerhouse of cinema stepping up for a leading role. The one and only Julie Andrews showed us that she was always meant to be a queen.

In the movie Hathaway played Mia, just your average high school student…

But her world gets totally flipped upside down when her grandmother, Queen Clarisse, played by Andrews, reveals she’s actually Princess of Genovia.

Whatever it is, they had it.

Hathaway and Andrews turned out to have some amazing chemistry and created a movie that has lived in thousands of teenage girl hearts ever since.

It quickly became a box office hit…

Earning a whopping $165.3 million after its release.

This movie has some serious charm!

Not only did we all fall in love with scenes like Mia’s hilarious transformation sequence…

But the movie gave us some serious laughs, as well!

And the bizarre characters that populated Mia’s world, from her best friend Lilly to Principal Gupta to Mr. Robotusen.

There was some heartfelt wisdom, too.

The lessons it taught us about being true to ourselves, no matter what we look like outside.

I’m pretty sure we all had a crush on the same guy too…

Michael was and always will be a heartthrob!

Then came part 2…

Thankfully Disney knew a good thing when they saw it and dished up The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement just a few years later.

This brought in $134.7 million globally, proving the fan base was still strong.

Both movies remain pop culture touchstones to this day.

However, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen our favorite characters…

We’ve had nothing Princess Diaries-related for a full eighteen years.

But finally, Disney has heard our plea…

And now that you’ve been reminded of the total greatness that was the original Princess Diaries, hopefully, you understand why we’re flipping out.

Rumors that a third film was being planned have circulated over the last few years…

Andrews even opened up about her part in a possible sequel, “I don’t know, I think I’m the one — she’s probably still OK for it, but I might just be a little too old a granny for it, I don’t know,” she told ET in June.

“It depends what the story is, and if they can come up with something, that would be wonderful, but if not, there will be other things.”

Hathaway also spoke out in October, “I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,” she told ET.

“If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work.

“We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”

Surprisingly, Hathaway actually revealed there was a script written for the third movie back in 2019…

She opened up on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that they “don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it.”

And it seems like the time has come.

Finally!

Who will we see?

Not only did Hathaway confirm that there is a script, but she also confirmed that she wants to do it too.

You can scream with joy now.

Even more important… Andrews is also in!

The project has now been confirmed by Disney…

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aadrita Mukerji, who worked on Reacher and Quantum Leap, is writing the script.

Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first 2 movies of the franchise, is producing the new film too.

So we know it’s going to be good!

Another important piece of news is that it will be a follow-on to the first 2 films…

Not a reboot.
