Although she refused to change her name, he insisted it's necessary in order to not cause offense.

This professor is in hot water.

He's found himself in controversy city - and he thoroughly deserves to be there.

Why?

Because he asked a foreign student to change her 'explicit name' in order not to cause offense in the classroom.

Matthew Hubbard has been a professor for years.

And is currently teaching mathematics at a college in Oakland, California.

The student was a freshman.

The student Hubbard insulted was only two days into her college course when he massively insulted her and her heritage.

She was proud of her name.

Although the student changed her name to May at school, she was looking forward to using her real name at college.

Until the professor kicked off.

Hubbard sent the student a series of emails on Wednesday, in which he asked her to anglicize her name.

He wrote:

Could you Anglicize your name. It sounds like an insult in English.

But things only got worse.

In another email, Hubbard wrote:

If I lived in Vietnam and my name in your language sounded like Eat A D***, I would change it to avoid embarrassment both on my part and on the part of the people who had to say it.

He continued:

I understand you are offended, but you need to understand your name is an offensive sound in my language.

The student didn't give in.

And told Hubbard that she would change her name just to please him and that if he kept going she would file a complaint with Title IX.

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 claims:

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

But Hubbard didn't stop.

And he continued trying to get the student to change her name...

Then he was placed on leave.

And the college acknowledged allegations of 'racist and xenophobic messages from a faulty member' who is now on 'administrative leave'.

The college's president spoke out.

Dr Tammeil Gilkerson wrote:

We have been firm and outspoken about our mission to educate, support and inspire students to excel in an inclusive and diverse learning environment rooted in social justice.

We want our students to feel safe and know that we honor their backgrounds, their experiences and everything that makes them unique.

They are everything that is beautiful about our college.

The statement continued:

On the surface this incident is obviously disturbing and comes after decades of discussing and working to combat structural racism, xenophobia, and violence in both the Black and Asian Pacific Islander community.

While our mission has been bold and unrelenting, we also recognize that our college and its community is a reflection of broader society and we must actively fight ignorance with education.

"We do not tolerate racism."

The statement concluded:
We do not tolerate racism, discrimination or oppression of any kind.

But just what is the student's name?

The student's name is Phuc Bui.

Phuc is a very common name.

The name comes from Vietnamese origin and quite literally translates to 'blessing'.

Phuc is furious at the professor.

But she's stood her ground and won the battle!

She called him ignorant.

Phuc admitted that in the past there had been confusion with her name but most people would just ask her how to pronounce it. She said:
He's being an ignorant person and not trying to learn my name.
Stay strong.
