Reebok Is Ending Its Partnership With CrossFit After Its Founder's 'Sickening' George Floyd Tweets | 22 Words

CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman has completely destroyed his own brand after a "sickening" tweet about George Floyd. So much so, that Reebok decided to end their partnership with him.

Let's start from the beginning.

On May 25th, a defenseless and unarmed black man was killed while in a police restraint.

George Floyd was arrested and forced to the ground...

Where former police officer, Derek Chauvin, proceeded to kneel on his neck for over 8 minutes, while 3 other officers knelt on his back.

Footage of George's "arrest" quickly circulated on social media...

And, in the highly distressing scenes, he could be heard begging with the officers to release him and repeatedly saying "Please, please... I can't breathe."

After nearly ten minutes, George was completely unresponsive.

An ambulance arrived and took the unconscious man to hospital but, devastatingly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. He was only forty-six years old and has left behind a fiancee and a 6-year-old daughter.

George died unlawfully at the hands of these officers.

The independent autopsy confirmed that he had passed away as a result of "asphyxiation from sustained pressure." This pressure had cut off blood flow to his brain, the autopsy concluded.

The 4 police officers involved have been arrested...

And Derek Chauvin, the officer responsible for kneeling on George's neck, is now facing a charge of second-degree murder.

This kind of unjust police brutality towards black men and women has been happening for centuries now...

But George's death has sparked an outrage like never before.

Thousands upon thousands of people have been taking to the streets in protest...

And they are all marching for one thing: For the blatant racism and injustice in this country to be brought to an end.

The protests haven't just been unique to the United States...

They have been held globally in countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.

But things were quick to turn violent.

Protesters became interweaved with rioters and, as they continue to clash with police, the scenes unfolding across our country have been becoming steadily more violent.

It is a truly terrifying time.

But change needs to be done and, at the moment, this seems like the only way to make it happen.

But, remarkably, they seem to be working.

Thanks to these riots, the Black Lives Matter movement is dominating global headlines, and it has completely taken over social media.

Everyone is talking about it.

Earlier this month, the hashtag #BlackOutTuesday started trending, with people from all over the world posting a blank black picture to demonstrate their solidarity with the movement.

But even though people are uniting more than ever...

There are still individuals who are sharing their ignorant views on the #BLM movement and George's death.

It turns out that not everyone stands by the growing demand for justice...

And it has emerged that even some big companies aren't as innocent as they seem when it comes to standing up to racism.

And CrossFit is one of those companies.

CrossFit is a branded fitness regimen created by Greg Glassman in 2000. It is promoted as both a physical exercise philosophy and a competitive fitness sport, incorporating elements from high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, gymnastics, and many other exercises.

But Glassman has landed his multi-million dollar company in very hot water thanks to a sickening comment about George Floyd.

In reply to a public health body saying racism was a public health issue, Greg Glassman tweeted in response: "FLOYD-19."

Things then got worse...

He also called an affiliate "delusional" for questioning why CrossFit had been silent on the killing of Floyd by police in Minneapolis.

The founder then made a U-turn...

According to the BBC, Glassman has now apologized for his cruel words, saying CrossFit "doesn't stand for racism." He said he had been trying to make a point about lockdowns that have been put in place to try to contain the spread of the global pandemic.

But the damage has already been done...

As a result of Glassman's careless tweets, hundreds of affiliate gyms have removed CrossFit from their branding.

Petworth Fitness in Washington DC - formerly CrossFit Petworth - very openly slammed the company on Instagram.

"For a brand that has preached about being 'for all', the deafening silence on current and past issues of racism tells us all we need to know." It added that it would donate its annual affiliate fee - $3,000 - to anti-racist campaign groups such as Black Lives Matter DC and Know Your Rights.

Several CrossFit athletes also criticized the company...

Including Olympian and 3-time CrossFit Games champion Tia-Clair Toomey, who said she was "incredibly saddened, disappointed and frustrated" with Glassman's comments.

Adidas AG, which owns Reebok, then issued a statement confirming it was ending its relationship with CrossFit.

"Recently, we have been in discussions regarding a new agreement, however, in light of recent events, we have made the decision to end our partnership with CrossFit HQ," the company said in a statement.

Thanks to Glassman's ignorant perspective, it seems that CrossFit will never recover from this.
