This Is the Answer To Stopping Your Dog From Biting
Dogs are man’s best friend, and while they’re great companions to have for years and years to come, they’re not perfect, much like us humans. They can be quite emotional at times, and in some cases, they can end up hurting their human companions. This can be a huge issue in a home with elderly or children, and if you think that your dog has a biting problem, then you’ll need to address it ASAP. Here are some steps you can take to prevent it from happening.
WHY DOES MY DOG BITE?
Dogs can bite for a number of reasons, and usually, it isn’t because of anything malicious or threatening. In fact, dogs bite other dogs all the time. But instead of biting aggressively, dogs will often bite playfully instead. This sort of biting is mostly harmless, and while it can be scary for an owner to experience for the first time, dogs usually won’t do more than a slight bite as a sign of playfulness.
Other than wanting to play, however, dogs can bite due to annoyance or fear. If a dog is being pestered for too long, it may bite in retaliation, and fear due to something or someone else can also cause the dog to bite. These bites can be dangerous, as they aren’t trying to be playful like with playful bites.
If you think that your dog keeps on biting you, and it’s not because they’re trying to be playful, then you’ll want to teach them that biting is bad.
HOW TO PREVENT DOGS FROM BITING
With a muzzle
This first tip is more of a temporary solution than anything else, and it’s recommended that you get rid of the dog muzzle as soon as possible once you know your dog understands not to bite. Muzzles are a great instant solution to biting problems as they prevent dogs from opening their mouths at all. And while this may seem like the easiest way to go about things, it’s not exactly the most enjoyable experience for your pet dog.
Dogs with dog muzzles on them are unable to open their mouths, meaning that aside from biting, they are also unable to do many other tasks. For one, dogs can’t eat or drink with the muzzle on. This means that you’ll have to remove the muzzle whenever they need to do so. Aside from this, dogs often groom themselves with their tongues, and you’re preventing them from doing so with a muzzle on. Finally, some dogs like to scratch parts of their body by nibbling on them, and muzzles deprive them of that, too.
Muzzles can be very effective when used in the right circumstance, but they should never be seen as a permanent solution.
By training them
The most effective way to prevent your dog from biting is by training them. To do this, you’ll need to brave a few bite attempts, but it will be worth the effort. Whenever your dog bites you, let out a loud yelp or noise to express your discomfort. Then, leave the dog alone — try to prevent them from following you if you can. Completely ignore them for about a minute or so. Repeat this process whenever they try to bite and they’ll eventually get the idea that biting causes you to lose interest in them.
