The hip-hop photographer and New York City legend, Ricky Powell, has died aged fifty-nine.

His cause of death has since been confirmed. Here's the full story...

Often referred to as the "fourth Beastie Boy," Powell touched the hearts of many with his work.

Powell is renowned for snapping some of hip hop's greatest icons over the years.

The sad news of his death was confirmed by Powell's manager Tono Radvany, who told Pitchfork: "I just want to let everybody know he was a very special man, and he will be sorely missed."

During his career, Powell was known for capturing the likes of Run-DMC, Chuck D, and LL COOL J.

As well as his work on the hip-hop scene, Powell also worked with Madonna, Andy Warhol, Sofia Coppola, and Vin Diesel.

However, Powell was known worldwide for his work with the Beastie Boys...

With whom he became close friends and was often referred to as the 4th band member.

Powell was born in Brooklyn and actually took up photography on a whim, after an ex-girlfriend left her camera at his apartment.

Little did he know at the time that it would change his life completely.

He got his big break in 1986 when he joined the Beastie Boys and Run DMC on tour. And the rest is history...

Powell is said to have died of heart failure at the age of fifty-nine.
