But their romance didn’t officially begin until 2000 when they announced they were dating.
In fact, Sarah told PEOPLE back in 2002, that the couple had plans for dinner with a mutual friend…

However, the friend bunked out at the last minute.
“We had made plans for dinner with a mutual friend and the person canceled. We decided to have dinner anyway and never looked back,” she said.

And the couple haven’t ever shied away from indulging in some PDA to illerate how much they love each other…
Like in 2000, when the couple shared champagne and a smooch at the MTV Movie Awards.

How sweet are they?
The couple has stuck by each other through thick and thin…

And even when Freddie bleached his hair blonde too.
They also managed to get through Freddie chopping all of his beautiful hair off.

So the best word to describe the duo would be couple goals!
After working together in I Know What You Did Last Summer, the duo starred as the famous cartoon couple, Fred and Daphne, in the live-action Scooby-Doo in 2002.

Which made fans even more elated.
Although they only shared few scenes in the North Carolina-set instant horror classic, they spent a great deal of time together.

And recalled how the duo became friends instantly.
“It was an hour drive just to get to the gym. So, I started driving her, and that’s when her and I became friends. And we just would talk about life and stuff like that, and we had completely different philosophies on just about everything.

“Cause she was a born and raised New Yorker and I was a born and raised L.A. kid, and we just looked at everything like night and day,” Freddie said.
But by the time they wrapped up the movie the couple formed a solid friendship.
“I just wanted to be friends with her because I thought she was too skinny and I wanted to cook for her. Because that’s what my family does.

“And so, we started this weekly barbecue thing at her house, and me and my cousins would come over and cook food for her and her friends. And then we’d make sure everybody ate, and that was kind of how our friendship began,” he said.
The couple were much loved so much that they teamed up for the sequel of Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed in 2004.

But what makes their bond so strong?
Well, one could say it’s because they were good friends first.
![](https://twentytwowords.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/GettyImages-174883697-1024x672.jpg.optimal.jpg)
And Freddie even said this in an old interview with E! News.
“We were friends for a good two years before we went on a date. She knew what kind of guy I was,” he said.
![](https://twentytwowords.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/GettyImages-175156310-672x1024.jpg.optimal.jpg)
Later adding: “She knew what my morals were, what my priorities were and vice versa. We already kind of knew all the faults in the other person.”
The actor also opened up about what makes a happy marriage, after the couple got hitched back in 2002…
“Sarah and I still make each other laugh, which is really important.

“When I say certain things to Sarah, and I see the look on her face, I know she loves me. And I live for that look, you know?” he told InStyle magazine.
And he wasnt the only one, as Sarah wrote one of the sweetest instagram captions in honor of their 13th wedding anniversary.
“I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me,” she wrote.

More recently the couple hit another milestone Sept. 1
After 2 decades of love and two kids, the couple celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary and decided to have a quiet chilled-out dinner together.

“We decided to still meet and catch up,” Sarah shared on Instagram.
While Freddie added: “A lot of girls back then in Hollywood—as far as the actresses—they didn’t eat. They ate salad,” he said.

But he took a dig at his wifey and said she ate everything on their first date.
“Sarah came to dinner with me, and we sat down. She ate everything, including a crab that they let walk across the counter, then killed while it was alive in some oil and said, ‘It’s popcorn, try,'” Freddie recalled.
![](https://twentytwowords.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/GettyImages-110407491-718x1024.jpg.optimal.jpg)
“I was like, ‘Yo, my girl is legit,'” he said.
“We work as a team, so any point I get, she gets, any point she gets, I get,” Freddie explained to Parade.
![](https://twentytwowords.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/GettyImages-107820684-683x1024.jpg.optimal.jpg)
“The last one that we watched, we got the first six answers in a row. We were like, ‘are you kidding me right now?! Time for someone to be on Celebrity Jeopardy!’ But we didn’t get any right for the rest of the show,” he added.
But that’s not all, the couple is not big on Valentine’s Day too…
“We don’t do presents, but we’ll get some smooches in there man,” Freddie said.
![](https://twentytwowords.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/GettyImages-107608785-704x1024.jpg.optimal.jpg)
And there’s more, the couple knows just how important it is to spend time together too, which is what got them through many issues in life…
“We ended up being the perfect balance,” Freddie told E! News.
![](https://twentytwowords.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/GettyImages-107588209-670x1024.jpg.optimal.jpg)
“There was a solid foundation built, and that’s probably the main reason why we’ve always been cool and groovy,” he said.
Well, there you have it, couple goals right here!
But this week, Sarah has spoken out about a rather less aspirational topic.
![](https://twentytwowords.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/GettyImages-1447278504.jpg.optimal.jpg)
Her poor treatment by male figures in her early career!
“For so long, I was on a set that I think was known for being an extremely toxic male set,” Sarah said during TheWrap’s Power of Women Summit.
![](https://twentytwowords.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/this-woman-accidentally-texted-sarah-michelle-gellar-about-her-engagement-and-got-the-most-amazing-response_1-719x1024.jpg.optimal.jpg)
“And so that was ingrained in my head that that was what all sets were like, and that women were pitted against each other — that if women became friends, then we became too powerful, so you had to keep that down.”
“Now that I’ve had this opportunity to work with so many more women and men that support women as well, I realized how easy an experience it can be.

“But… unfortunately we’re still in that place where all of those departments a lot of times need to be women for us to have a voice,” she said.
