Satanic Temple Takes Legal Action Against Texas Abortion Law and Says Members Are Exempt

The religious group, The Satanic Temple, has hit back against Texas’ anti-abortion laws, pushing for religious freedom for everyone.

For those of you that might not be aware, the religious group based in Massachusetts claims to encourage “benevolence and empathy, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense, oppose injustice, and undertake noble pursuits,” according to their website.

And very recently, they have also encouraged the choice of abortion for women, filing a letter with the US Food and Drug Administration, arguing that it is the faith-based right of its members to be able to have an abortion.

Lucien Greaves, The Satanic Temple spokesperson also blasted the restrictive law.

“I am sure Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton—who famously spends a good deal of his time composing press releases about Religious Liberty issues in other states—will be proud to see that Texas’s robust Religious Liberty laws, which he so vociferously champions, will prevent future Abortion Rituals from being interrupted by superfluous government restrictions meant only to shame and harass those seeking an abortion,” he said.
“The battle for abortion rights is largely a battle of competing for religious viewpoints, and our view that the nonviable fetus is part of the impregnated host is fortunately protected under Religious Liberty laws,” he added as per Fortune.

The Satanic Temple also spoke out in a Twitter statement too.

“The Satanic Temple is already in litigation against Texas regarding restrictions to abortion access, such as waiting periods, which interfere with TST’s religious ritual,” they wrote in the statement.
The statement finished by saying: “SB8 is cynically designed to avoid judicial review of the law and creates enforcement mechanisms against The Satanic Temple and our lawyers who dare challenge the law. We will not be intimidated into silence by an unjust law or an authoritarian state government. We intend to fight.”

The group also posted to Instagram stating that: “TST stands ready to assist any member that shares our deeply-held religious convictions regarding the right to reproductive freedom.”

“Accordingly, we encourage any member who resides in Texas and wishes to undergo the Satanic Abortion Ritual within the 1st twenty-four weeks of pregnancy to contact The Satanic Temple so we may help them fight this law directly,” the post continued.

The Temple itself has 7 fundamental tenets…

1 of the 7 tenets explains that: “The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.”
And the 4th tenet says: “The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one’s own.”
The group continues to update people on the campaign to defend women and their reproductive rights on both their website and their social media in the hopes that they can protect people’s freedoms as well as help get this controversial law thrown out.
