Selena Gomez is one of the biggest stars alive right now through both her music and her love life.

And for a long time Gomez held the record of most Instagram followers of all time.

However with an audience that big, you're likely to attract some trolls who don't have many nice things to say - and that was the case.

Selena was particularly upset at how Facebook and Instagram allow so much hate and false information. She was so annoyed that she even wrote out to Mark Zuckerberg himself and shared the messages online.

It was a whirlwind relationship for the pair.

Rumors regarding their romance were first ignited when they were seen eating pancakes at IHOP together in 2010. At first, Selena attempted to shut down rumors, telling Us Weekly "It was just pancakes."

Well, as you all know, it turned out to not be just pancakes.

The couple spent the next couple of years dodging breakup rumors and attending red carpet events together - all in all, things seemed to be going well.

However, after years of drama, cracks began to finally show in 2014.

Tabloids reported at the time that the couple had an enormous fight at Coachella after Selena allegedly found photos of Kylie Jenner on Justin’s phone.

Following this, the couple broke up...

But, evidently unable to stay away from one another, they rekindled their romance a couple of months later.

Justin revealed that their romance was back on track with this Instagram post.

He captioned the black and white selfie with "Our love is Unconditional."

But, sadly, it wasn't to be.

Selena and Justin managed to make it work for a couple more months until the tabloids reported that Justin’s "secret liaisons" with Kendall Jenner were the reason behind the split.

Following her split from Justin, Selena went on to have a near-constant string of boyfriends...

One of the most publicized being with musician, The Weeknd - though, of course, Justin remained very much in her life, with the pair being spotted out and about together several times in the years following their break-up.

But now, fast-forwarding to 2020, Selena is single once more.

And explained: "It’s hard in quarantine... It’s just funny that I release things that say I want a boyfriend and stuff, and I’m like, ‘I didn’t really mean it, though. Guys are a lot of work.'"

Selena admitted that she doesn't have "everything figured out"...

And, when Nikkie asked her if there's anything else she'd like to learn in life, she replied with: "I think just getting more and more comfortable with myself, I definitely spent years and years thinking I had to be a certain way - the older I get, the more that feeling goes away."

However, she then made a quick and somewhat shocking comment regarding her old flames.

"Every one of my exes thinks I’m crazy," she added. "So, I don't care."

Selena remained straight-faced and somewhat blasé as she made her comment...

While Nikki, who was working on her eyebrows at the time, stopped what she was doing and gasped with laughter, saying: "I am so dead, I am so dead."

But what's going on with Selena now? Well, Selena has always been an open and friendly person who likes to look out for folks...

And that's why she wrote to Mark Zuckerberg.

Selena wrote to Zuckerberg, the founder and owner of Facebook, addressing her concerns with the level of hate that exists on Facebook and Instagram.

"We have a serious problem."

Gomez claimed there is a serious problem with social media, allowing hate to be spread so widely.

More specifically she wrote:

It's been a while since we sat down. We have a serious problem.

@facebook and @instagram are being used to spread hate, misinformation, racism, and bigotry. I am calling on you both to HELP STOP THIS.

Selena's shared her message with her 193 million Instagram followers.

She did so after the hashtag, #StopHateForProfit went viral. A hashtag relating to how social media companies allow hate so long as they're profiting.

Numerous other celebrities joined the hashtag.

Jennifer Lawrence wrote:
Facebook ignores hate & disinformation on their site. This is not an "operational mistake." It is a deliberate decision to put profits over people and democracy.
Let's see if Zuckerberg responds to Gomez's message...
