Despite a mixed critical reception, the movie was a box office hit and managed to firmly cement its status as a cult classic.

The infamous flick followed Cecile Caldwell, played by Selma, a sheltered young girl to whom Kathryn Merteuil, played by Sarah, uses to exact revenge on an ex-boyfriend and her step-brother.

And of course...

The movie featured that kiss between Selma and Sarah's characters.

But, let's start from the beginning...

Born April 14, 1977 in New York, Sarah Michelle Gellar is perhaps best known for her work on the popular series, Buffy The Vampire Slayer - a spin-off of the movie of the same same.

The show became an instant international hit.

The show's combination of a strong female lead, supernatural and adventure themes, and wry humor have been credited as reasons for its huge success. But, all good things must eventually come to an end, and after  7 seasons, Buffy wrapped up production in 2003.

While starring in Buffy...

Sarah added a slate of movies to her credits, including the likes of teen thrillers I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) and Scream 2 (1997), rom-com Simply Irresistible (1999), and of course, Cruel Intentions (1999),

Michigan- born actress Selma Blair rose to fame for a very different kind of box office hit.

And her acting career really took off.

Aside from her role a year later in Cruel Intentions alongside Sarah...

Selma is also known for her roles in Legally Blonde (2001) and The Sweetest Thing (2002).

But she isn't just known for her acting...

She is an active supporter in charity work, working for and donating to numerous charities such as the Marc Jacobs Skin Cancer Awareness Campaign, H&M’s Fashion Against AIDS  Campaign, Children’s Action Network, and No Kids Hungry.

An actress, activist, and a mom...

Selma is a mom to her only son, Arthur, who she had with fashion designer, Jason Bleick. She and Jason are now separated, but it is reported that they have stayed friends and are both involved in their sons’ life.

But she made a heartbreaking announcement in 2018...

Selma announced on her Instagram that she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and had unknowingly been battling the illness for the last fifteen years. She revealed that she felt like “something wasn’t right" for years and it was only her doctor who realized when she fell over in front of him.

The chronic disease is a lifelong condition...

Multiple Sclerosis, which is also known as MS, is a condition that affects the brain and spinal cord, causing a wide range of symptoms including problems with vision, sensation, or balance.

In many cases, the symptoms can be managed...

But for the majority of MS patients, life expectancy is always slightly reduced. Other painful conditions come with the illness, including muscle spasms, problems with thinking and memory, and long-term difficulty in walking.

Despite MS generally being livable...

Being diagnosed with the illness means a drastic change in day-to-day life and numerous rounds of treatment which is wearing and painful on the body. But many manage to keep a positive attitude, and Selma is certainly one of those people.

Selma insisted that she was "ok..."

Her Instagram post expressed that she “wants to play with her son again" and how she wants to be able to “walk down the street and ride her horse."

Her positive attitude is inspiring...

And is making us love her even more!

Selma has been honest and on the line about both the physical and men talk side effects of the illness...

As well as giving fans a glimpse into her treatments, Selma has expressed how mentally draining having MS is, with anxiety and stress levels being through the roof. Despite her new-found issues with social anxiety and crippling headaches, she still somehow managed to maintain a positive outlook and even wrote: “life is an adventure with many shards of awakening."

Her body's physical strength has been dwindling...

And she has been using methods such as massage and body contour to “bring her sluggish cells back" and to “push her slack legs."

Recently, Selma shaved her entire head.

She shared an Instagram post in light of being discharged from hospital after a temporary stay. Her new look is a representation of new beginnings, after writing on her Instagram: “I see things much more clearly now, and I am excited to share this journey when I am ready. For now, I have recovery."

But Sarah has been there to support her every step of the way.

That's what friends are for, right?

The 2 really have remained best friends.

And this week, they decided to recreate that infamous Cruel Intentions kiss to mark Selma's birthday.

The kiss was so famous...

That it even won the MTV Movie Award for best kiss at the time.

Just to jog your memory...

Well, it's only a snapshot but you get the picture.

At first, Sarah took to Instagram to share a throwback of them about to lock lips at the MTV Movie Awards to mark her BFF's birthday.

"Since I will have to stay six feet away from you today (and wear a mask) this will be as close as I get to giving you a birthday kiss. Happy Birthday @selmablair," she captioned the pic.

But it seems the pair managed to find a way around the lockdown restrictions.

And Selma got her makeshift birthday kiss. "I got my kiss @selmablair," Sarah updated on her Instagram.

It might not have been what they were initially going for...

But it certainly had a 2020 twist. Happy Birthday (belated), Selma!
