Simone Biles' boyfriend definitely gets the goal medal when it comes to being the world's most supportive boyfriend! Johnathan Owens, who plays safety for the Houston Texans football team, cheered on Biles at her Olympic trials in St. Louis wearing a shirt bearing a quote from the gymnast.
The red shirt bearing the phrase "Because I Can," was worn by Johnathan as well as her parents Nellie and Ronald. Johnathan also greeted her with flowers after she qualified for the Olympic Games.
After they posed for pictures in the locker room, it seems Johnathan and their friends went on an epic celebratory double date: They literally rode in a horse-drawn carriage through the streets of St. Louis.
3 weeks ago Owens posted a picture with Biles on Instagram and wrote about how much he was looking forward to watching her in the trials: "What an amazing experience! First time getting to watch you compete in person and you didn't disappoint. It's so cool that I get to watch you do what you love, and be the best at that ‼️ I'm so proud of you my lil champ. Trials up next and you already know I'm there!! Love you baby," he wrote.
Unfortunately, Johnathan won't be able to join Biles in Japan due to the country's COVID restrictions, reports People. However, we're sure he'll be continuing his cheerleading from the U.S.
During the third episode of his girlfriend's Facebook Watch docu-series, Simone vs Herself, Owens details the early days of his relationship with Biles. And while he says he knew she was a gymnast, the NFL player acknowledges he wasn't aware she was the gymnast.
"Her work ethic was really the first thing that caught my eye," Owens said, "I never really watched gymnastics before I first started talking to her. When I met her, I honestly didn't know who she was."
"The coolest thing for me is that I get to witness someone who is literally in the pinnacle of their sport," Owens said. "It's motivating to see that and the impact that she has on people. We were walking past this group of girls and they were shaking, 'Oh my god, it's Simone!'"
"This is when I kind of knew," he added. "Like, OK, yeah, she's the real deal," he added.
Simone Biles is arguably one of the greatest gymnasts of all time. After blowing everyone away at the 2016 Rio Olympics, she has become a household name continuing to wow us with her skills. In May, the gymnast became the first-ever woman to complete a Yurchenko double pike vault at the U.S Classic meet, making history with the tricky skill. She currently has 4 skills named after her, meaning she was the first athlete to successfully perform them in international competition.
She currently has a myriad of skills so complicated she is the only athlete capable of pulling them off. This includes a triple-twisting, double somersault on floor exercise, and a double-twisting, double somersault dismount off the balance beam.
You can see Simone Biles compete at the Tokyo Olympic Games starting on July 23rd.
