Photo of Simone Biles Surrounded by Cameras Perfectly Illustrates Why She Needed To Take a Break

A new photo showing Simone Biles behind the scenes displays the real reason she needed to take time out for her mental health…

As we all know, Simone Biles withdrew from the team competition last Tuesday, July 27. She later told reporters she had a case of the “twisties,” a gymnastics term where the mind and body don’t sync up.

Biles originally qualified for the individual all-around on July 29 and all 4 of the apparatus rounds, scheduled for 1-3 August, but eventually withdrew from all but the balance beam as she was struggling with her mental health.

It started a huge debate online, basically stating that mental health should be looked at in the same way as physical health, and Biles says this means more to her than any medal…

“Definitely bringing a light to the conversation of mental health, it’s something that people go through a lot that is kind of pushed under the rug,” said Biles when asked whether the conversation she sparked in Tokyo was more important than a medal. “I feel like we’re not just entertainment, we’re humans, as well, and we have feelings.”

And now a new photo has surfaced showing just how much pressure she was under as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time…

James Longman from ABC News posted a photo online of Biles surrounded by cameras from every angle. His post read: “Wonder why she might need a break? Simone at the beam finals. Judges behind her. Cameras in front.”

And people are shocked by the behind-the-scenes photo…

One Facebook user shared their disgust at the press for getting so close to the athlete, writing: “That’s awful that they can be in her face like that. Don’t they have telescoping lenses they can use farther away? This shouldn’t be allowed let along during Covid outbreak.”

While another commented: “It’s funny how the media now realizes that they were part of her problem. Instead of going away and leaving her alone, they now have cameras in her face doing stories on mental health. At the end of the day, she still has cameras in her face which is part of the problem. As was so eloquently said by Caleb Dressel, ‘Just leave her alone.’ Too bad the media doesn’t listen.”

However, not everyone thinks the cameras are the reason for her withdrawal…

“She hasn’t said no to endorsements, ads, media coverage and has already scheduled her own solo post-Olympic ‘Tour’ in the states, not affiliated with USAG. She thrives in the spotlight. A beam medal meant she is the most decorated gymnast and tied for most Olympic medals. Maybe that was the plan. Maybe she was giving others a shot. Maybe it was the poor vault. Maybe she was stressed about family matters. Who knows, but cameras aren’t the problem. Elite gymnasts are used to it,” a third wrote.

Although she might not have planned for any of this to happen, Biles says she’s heading home happy after winning bronze on the balance beam.

“Leaving Tokyo with 2 more Olympic medals to add to my collection isn’t too shabby!” she posted on Instagram Today, August 4.
