During her performance on Saturday Night Live in 1992, she tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II to protest against abuse in the Catholic Church.

That incident sparked a ton of controversy and led to O’Connor getting a lifetime ban from ever appearing on SNL again.

But, regardless of any backlash she was met with, the singer never backed down.

 Throughout her career, Sinéad openly discussed her spiritual journey, activism, socio-political viewpoints, and her experiences with trauma and struggles with mental health.

After converting to Islam in 2018, she adopted the name Shuhada’ Sadaqat, though she continued to perform and record under her birth name.

Sadly, on July 26, 2023, Sinéad O’Connor passed away.

 “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” her family shared in a statement at the time.

The statement continued, “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

The following day, London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed they responded to “reports of an unresponsive woman at a residential address.”

 At the time, police noted that her death wasn’t being treated as “suspicious.”

Now, approximately six months after the singer’s passing, her cause of death has finally been revealed.

A rep for London’s Southwark Coroner’s Court confirmed to E! News on January 9 that O’Connor died of “natural causes.”

They went on to add that  “the coroner has therefore ceased their involvement in her death.”

O’Connor was 56 at the time of her death.

The artist’s passing came more than a year after her 17-year-old son Shane died by an apparent suicide after he was reported missing.
