On any given day, there are nearly 443,000 children in foster care here in this country.

The fostering process is a long one...

And children are often bounced from one foster home to another, therefore never experiencing any real stability while growing up. Some children are even separated from their siblings in the foster process.

This can result in serious harm...

The longer a child remains in temporary care, the more likely it is that he or she will experience multiple placement changes, and therefore disrupted relationships in the future.

Many children are stuck in the foster care system for years...

A lot of people assume that the foster system is a short-term solution, a substitute family, while a child's home life is getting settled or arranged... but this is not the case.

But how do children end up in foster care?

The majority of children in foster care come from broken and unstable families who are incapable of caring for them.

But in some circumstances...

Some children land themselves in foster care because they have been abandoned by their families.

It is a truly heartbreaking reality...

And this can lead to severe stress and trauma in a child.

But in the case of Tony Mutabazi, things were very different...

Tony has spent the majority of his life in foster care, and when he was 4-years-old, he was adopted by a couple from Oklahoma.

Things seemed to be going well...

But 2 years ago, when Tony was eleven, his adopted parents dropped him off at a hospital and never returned.

His adopted parents never gave a reason as to why they abandoned him...

And they haven't been heard from since.

Tony was sadly put back into foster care...

But he struck gold when he met Peter Mutabazi, his future adoptive dad who is from North Carolina.

Peter was an experienced foster parent who had already fostered twelve children...

And in January of 2018, he received a call to see if he could take Tony for the weekend. Speaking to Good Morning America, he said he was originally supposed to have Tony stay at his home for 2 days... But then he learned Tony's story.

Tony's story truly struck Peter...

"By that time, I was crying. I thought, 'Who would do that?' Once I knew the parents' rights were signed off and he had nowhere to go, I [knew] I had to take him," Peter explained.

The pair clicked from the moment they met each other...

And it didn't take long for Peter to look into becoming Tony's legal father.

Peter loved having Tony around and he never wanted him to leave...

"I had the room, the resources, so I had no reason to let him go," he said.

And in November of last year...

Tony's adoption was made official in a Charlotte courthouse.

Tony now lives in Charlotte with his new dad...

Peter said he and Tony enjoy watching movies, playing board games, reading books and bicycling together, and they are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new foster child who will be arriving later this year.

This is a truly beautiful story...

And we wish Peter and Tony all of the happiness in the world. Keep scrolling to learn about the single dad who has fostered more than fifty young men in the last twelve years...
