Sofia Vergara is opening up about how she’s living her best life while going through a divorce.
Going through a public divorce is something that many celebrity couples have had to endure, but that doesn’t make it any easier.
After ending a relationship, the last thing most people want to think about is the public’s perception of their break up–but celebrities have no choice.
Of course, some couples handle these issues better than others, and Sofia Vergara seems to be doing about just as well as you can imagine after such a big life change.
Sofia’s expectations…
During a new interview on CBS Sunday Morning, Vergara revealed that she completely expected the media whirlwind surrounding her split from Joe Manganiello.
The pair called it quits in June 2023, issuing a joint statement about their split just days before Manganiello filed for divorce.
“You’re out there [in the public eye] and people know that’s part of being a celebrity,” Vergara began.
“I knew it was gonna happen,” the Modern Family alum insisted. “You can’t hide those things.”
When asked how she “overcame” all of the public scrutiny that comes with a divorce, the actress insisted the type of media coverage she got was a huge help.
The surprising truth
“It wasn’t bad,” she said. “I think, you know, I have to say the press was very respectful and very nice.”
Sofia continued, “And I thought that they were gonna invent more things, and you know how it usually is. I was surprised and, you know, they, they kind of just said what it was and, and that was it.”
Back in July, the couple released a joint statement saying that they made the “difficult decision” to divorce after seven years of marriage.
“As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect for our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives,” they wrote at the time.
Two days after they released the statement, Manganiello filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
According to divorce documents obtained by PEOPLE, the actor listed the date of separation as July 2.
Sofia’s futureAfter getting through the initial rough patch, Vergara said that she’s been able to really shift her focus on living her best life in the present and the future.
“And, you know, I’ve been moving on,” she said in the interview.
The fact that Vergara is moving on shouldn’t come as a surprise as she has been photographed on multiple dates over the past few months with orthopedic surgeon Justin Saliman.
Manganiello has also been putting himself out there, dating actress Caitlin O’Connor since September.
Even though she had an “interesting” and “difficult” 2023, the actress noted to PEOPLE in November that she was “excited” to see what the new year would bring.
“I don’t want to say ‘bad’ or anything like that, but it’s been very interesting and very difficult,” Vergara said of 2023.
“I went through a divorce this year, the SAG strike that went on for so long,” she noted.
“I’ve seen my friends struggle – some had to take their kids out of their schools or had problems with their mortgages, so it’s been a weird, weird year,” the actress admitted.
“It’s not like it’s bad,” she clarified. “I think all the things are resolving, everything is going to be OK and I’m very excited for next year.”
“I’m excited for the TV show that is coming,” she said referring to her Netflix limited series Griselda.
Sofia went on to tease: “I have a lot of projects for next year that hopefully people will love as well.”
“I’m excited for [skincare brand] Toty, which has been doing really well since we started and people are loving it because it’s such a good quality product,” she continued.
While 2023 was a rough year for a lot of folks, it looks like Sofia has a lot to look forward to in 2024.
As for her divorce, Vergara asked the courts that the couple’s prenuptial agreement be honored.
